my dog had his microchip put in about a year ago, its bsically the size of a grain of rice, the the needle is bigger to hold it, and its injected between the skin/fat of the shoulder blades. He didn't seem to mind it at all.
and of course it's the right thing to do, if your dog ever got out and got its collar/tags off then they can scan for a microchip and return your dog to you.

You don't have to worry. The shot uses a bit bigger needle then a regular shot. All three of my dogs have them. The two that had them implanted while awake did not seem to notice. The other one had hers done while she was out when being spayed. I have a 9 week old pup that will be getting hers as soon as she is old enough.
Here is something else I did to make sure they were covered if they ever got out. Go to http://www.pettags.com/ They sell dog tags that have a toll free number that can be called 24/7 that can identify you as the dog owner. I don't know if you can call US toll free Numbers from The UK.

You are doing the right thing. Honestly my puppy cried a little bit when I got him microchip, but after a few seconds he was fine. Now I feel secure knowing that if he got lost he would most likely be returned to me. Try not to worry your puppy will be fine

What are you worried about? The pain? Don't worry about that.. You're dog'll be fine I'm sure. Has (s)he had his/her shots yet? If so, it will probably just feel like (s)he's getting his/her shots!

It's a very good thing. If he ever gets loose or lost they will scan him and he'll be home in no time.
