Mildest onion?

What is the most mild onion? Red, yellow or white?

White onions are considered the mildest, then yellow, and red being the strongest; although, Vidalia onions are the sweetest. The lighter the onion is in color, the milder it is.

I have a sensitivity to onions, I cannot eat them raw, so I can vouch for the red onion being the strongest.

In general, white onions are the mildest.

Whether an onion is a spring/summer or fall/winter onion also affects mildness and sweetness. Spring/summer fresh onions are available in yellow, red and white throughout their season, March through August are milder than fall/winter storage onions.

Going by what I buy at the grocery store, white is typically the mildest followed by red and then yellow. However, any onion sauteed long enough carmelizes and becomes very sweet.

All you guys are saying white are the mildest, but I just read an article that says they are the strongest. More confused than ever.

I'd say yellow in my experience. Vidalia onions in particular are very sweet and tasty, they are commonly used for onion rings.

A Vidallia or Mahi Sweet are pretty good, even if that isn't to your liking then go with Scallots, a bit lighter in flavor though
