we just had a chick recently hatch out, about an hour ago. Everything seemed to go fine, but there is this little stringy thing hanging from his rear end that is stuck to the egg shell. His body came out fine, and is not attached to shell in anyway, it's just that little stringy thing that is connected to his shell.

He seems alright, but everywhere he goes, the shell comes with him...kinda like a little leash. Any ideas what this is? Should we get rid of it? I'm not going to mess with anything until I know what it is.

The stringy thing is probably just a shell membrane that dried to the chicks feathers and the shell. You can cut it really close to the shell so that the chick can run about freely. Don't cut close to the chick or you risk cutting his skin. The string should fall off within a few days up to a few weeks by itself.

Use a wet cotton bud and slowly ease the membrane (stringy thing) away from the bird. This occurs when humidity is low, if you are hatching eggs in an incubator then raise the humidity, if they are parent hatched then just look out for any birds struggling to get out of the eggs, low humidity can also cause stuck birds.

You can cut the stringy thing off, but be careful not to cut the chick. It's probably just a membrane and the chick will be fine.
