Why limit this to Islam? Christianity thinks the same way.

You are right, that wouldn't be fair. In addition to the verse that was posted here, there is a saying of the Prophet which`says:
He will not enter hell who has faith equal to a mustard seed in his heart.
There is no belief in Islam that a person who has never heard of the Islamic message is doomed for Hell. Allah is the Most Gracious and Merciful and we are His beloved creations. He does not send us to Hell for naught but our own evil. It is also the Islamic belief that a person who died before learning anything about Islam will have an opportunity in the spirit world to accept Allah as his Creator much as people have that opportunity to seek Him here.

If some one have not heard about Islam and does not know its teachings then he will not punish. I don't know how to translate that Hadith exactly but it kind of means whoever is ill, or doesn;t know about Islam will not be punishied, or something in this meaning

Many religions have similar beliefs. If you don't believe in "so-so" god, then you will go to hell. It also depends on how strict the religion is enforced. Of course it's unfair, but that is how they were brought up as a culture and that is what they believe in. It's like a child truly believing in Santa Clause and expecting presents from him every year. It'll be difficult to force them not to beleive it once it is their belief. Savvy?

Well, as a Muslim myself, I've had the oh-so-pleasantly-harsh experience of being told in no uncertain terms that I am going to hell because I don't accept Jesus as my savior. Now, I don't mind proselytizing too much, but *she* crossed the line saying this.
In fact, in Islam not all non-Muslims are damned to hell. Gasp! God doesn't punish unfairly chidren, the mentally ill, the crazy or the ignorant. In those instances he judges ur intent (what's in ur heart). Of course God won't give heaven to everyone; esp. those who vehemently deny Him and persecute His humble servants. That would be unjust for those who do good in God's name. And to quote a Quranic verse (straight from the source):
"Any who believe in God and the last day and do good deeds...shall have their reward with the lord. On them shall be no fear nor shall they grieve."
Have a nice day. God bless =D

It is not required that someone know anything about Islam. God has instilled in us innately monotheism. So if someone was born in the jungle and never met another human, God has give him/ her enough ability to worship one God, this person is not required to believe in Islam as other Muslims do because he was not exposed to it. However, this is rarely the case, people study for years math, science, even things like art, but they never once thought about God this is impossible. Furthermore the most gravest and unforgivable sin is to associate partners with God. Christianity claims that God has a son. Hinduism, buddhism, etc. are all clearly polytheistic. It is important to remember that Allah (God) is all-Just, he will never punish someone unfairly. His right upon us is that we are obedient to him because as He says in the Quran he has not created mankind except to worship. So if we deny him worship we are from amongst the worst of mankind. However, if we attempt to worship him solely as he deserves we will automatically accept Islam as the truth if Allah so wills. To learn more about Islam go to http://islaam.ca or http://spubs.com. Remember that all the beliefs in Islam and its rulings are grounded in proof from the Quran and the way of the Prophet peace be upon him, so we cannot accept statements without proof just as a judge doesn't convict a man without evidence. Is it fair that someone who murders another person gets the same punishment as reward as a similar person who has never murdered someone? No! Similarly Allah's right over us to worship him is greater that another human beings right over us, such as the right our kids have for us to provide food for them. So if we don't give Allah his right he has promised that he will punish us even though he does not need us to worship him, nor does he need us to provide for Him. This is because Allah has created us to worship Him and has created consequences for us if we don't.

First of all, children would never go to hell.
Second of all, no one will miss the chance to be in heaven.
Third of all, here is a verse from Quran that can explain:
[5:69] Surely, those who believe, those who are Jewish, the converts, and the Christians; any of them who (1) believe in GOD and (2) believe in the Last Day, and (3) lead a righteous life, have nothing to fear, nor will they grieve.
Peace.

all religions believe that those who do not follow them will go to hell.
Judiasm believe that they are the 'chosen ones'
Christians believe that you need to have Jesus as your 'savior'
so Islam is not the only one.
However, in Islam it is recognized (in the quran) that not ALL muslims are going to heaven, as well as, not ALL non-muslims are going to hell.

Interesting. Religion, as it is practiced in many parts of the world, can be rigid and unforgiving. Religion - not Jesus Christ. I know nothing of Islam - but I do know that you can come to believe in Jesus at the very end, the very last minute, of your life and you can be saved. The choice is yours - not mine to choose for you.
It is for you to choose whether or not to believe in Jesus as your savior once someone has told you about Him and his sacrifice on our behalf - and it certainly isn't for me to make the judgment of what will happen to those who have never heard of Jesus Christ and His salvation.
Judgment ALWAYS belongs to God (Matthew 7:1-2). My job is to live in harmony with everyone - I don't get to pick and choose to whom I show kindness. I have no right to condemn anyone, or anyone's children, to hell.
Paul warned that "as far as it is up to you, live at peace with everyone" and Jesus said you must forgive one who offends or hurts you "seventy times seven". Jesus was, for the most part, peaceful. And that's how I try to live.
Peace.
