Depends greatly on your level of activity and how large you are. Active people burn more calories, so tap into their fat reserves much sooner than those more sedentary. Larger people just need more calories just too keep all their part alive and functioning.

The lady who answere "1200" couldn't possibly know that would be true for everybody. I had a doctor want to put me on an 1100 daily calorie diet, just to lose weight, and he wouldn't put me on a "starvation diet." Not without continuous medical supervision.

The term "starvation diet" refers to 900 calories a day. This is true of any person on a 2000-2500 calorie-a-day diet.
