Thanks in advance.

I can't tell you in general, but I can tell you the top ten breeds and mixes we see at my county pound.
1) Labs and Lab mixes
2) Labs and Lab mixes
3) Labs and Lab mixes
5) Shepard mixes (generally, Shepard/Labrador crosses)
6) Austrailian Cattledogs
7) Coon-hounds, in general
8) Heinz-57s
9) Border collie mixes
10) "Pit-bull" mixes and American Eskimos (tie)
In ours - yep, Border Collies (though mixed with another breed) do make it on our top ten. But compared to the number of dogs that hail somehow from Labrador Retrievers . . .that number ain't nothin'.
And I don't understand "and was wondering if there were winding my up or not?"

I doubt it, border collies aren't that common, at least in my neck of the woods.
I would guess labs and pitbulls are WAAAAAAAAY up there.
But of course, you can never tell, because every dog that has ever been "breed identified" on here ALWAYS ends up some sort of collie mix, or a pit mix.
I just don't think anyone really knows what they're talking about.

This site talks a little bit about top 10 breeds relinquished
Scroll down just a tad, you'll see it.

Go to petfinder.com and do a breed search. All of the breeds will come up with the number of that breed in shelters throughout the US. That should give you a pretty realistic idea of what breeds are in the shelters. Border Collies are UP there!

border collies are high up there as the type of dog in shelters, but i couldn't tell you at what position. they are one of the dogs you can get the most behavioural problems with because of their herding instinct and they like to make their own "fun" when their mind isnt kept stimulated by the owners. as well as that people get fed up with the exercise that they require. so MANY of them end up in shelters
this is the top ten most discarded dogs list for 2002.
Labrador Retrievers (all colors combined) 7653
GSD's and Shepherds (combined) 6433
Am.Staffs & Pit Bulls (combined) 2288
Beagle 1951
Rottweiler 1857 :(
Terrier (type unspecified) 1786
Border Collie 1606
ChowChow 1553
Hound (unspecified) 1257
Collie 1247

Sadly, it's very true. The reason is they are the cutest puppies ever and people buy them without researching the breed. Not know how high energy they are and that they need not only training, but a job too. They can't handle them and this is why they are given up. Hopefully people will become more educated about breeds before jumping and and getting a cute puppy. All the best;~)

Not certain of the order anymore, but in my experience:
1. mixes
2. pits
3. labs
4. beagles
5. shepherds
6. cockers & springers
7. dalmatians
8. rotties
9. basset hounds
10. poodles
ADDED: Yes, huskies and boxers are common too. I know the dogs that almost always got put down were large and black. So many of them, no one wants them...kinda like a certain someone's shar pei/lab puppies.
