Caffiene doesn't make your waistline bigger, it increases thermogenesis and therefore speeds the metabolic rate up. It could possibly be the carbonated water that may make you feel bloated, but there's really no evidence to support that. The chemicals in Diet Coke that make it differ from Coke are Acesulfame and Aspartame. These two substances aren't exactly good for you, they're what scientists are now calling "you said 'could we?', but you didn't say 'should we?'", like in Jurassic Park (that long line Jeff Goldblum says). Scientists predict these substances to change the human body by vast amounts in the future, much as McDonalds did before people knew how bad it was.

The carbonation causes excess gas and an extended tummy temporarily. I'd be even more concerned about what soda does to your bones, teeth, and skin. Anything that can take rust off a nail shouldn't be ingested!

The sodium can cause you retain water.
I've also heard that when your body receives the sweetness of the cola, it expects sugar...then, when it does not get the sugar, it begins to crave it...so it potentially, through a series of events, cause you to eat more.
