Like if you go out to eat, can you tell without eating it?

Oil stays with the food. Press down with a fork and you can see the oil on your plate. Do be double-sure, lightly press a paper napkin (you might have to carry one) on the food- if the spot disappears in a few minutes- it's just moisture, if it stays- it's oil.

You would ask the cook, if you have a problem with oil.
It is difficult to tell, as there are so many oil that have very little scent.
It maybe a little oily if it hasn't been drained properly.

Maybe if you had a really good sense of smell you could tell. But I think it would be hard to know if it was oil, butter, or something else all together without tasting it.

Unless it all been drained really well, you can pretty much tell. If you are worried about the amount of oil or type of oil, just ask your server. Good luck!

If your fingers are greasy after touching it then there's a good chance it was cooked in oil.
