It does it at no particular time. Sometimes when she hits a bump . Sometimes just going down the road. Sometimes when she turns a corner. They took it to a garage and they said it was the struts. After changing the struts, it still made the clunking sound. Another mechanic said it was definitely the transmission. After putting in a rebuilt transmission it still clunks. Any suggestions?

It sounds like there is a loose or worn out suspension bushing, before you spend any more money for guess work , let it be clear that if the diagnoses does not fix the problem you don't pay for nothing and get it in writing. You should return to both places and ask for a partial refund based on the fact the same problem is steel there. The suspension clunk could be the bushing where it is mounted to the frame of the vehicle. So be careful and GOD Bless

it can also be the strut mount bearings on the top of the struts, they go bad very often on dodges and Plymouth products, have them to check these, they may also want to check out any mounts on the engine or transmission, there's a lot of things on that car that can clunk, you may want to stop spending money on things people say it is,and have a shop take it and find the problem once and for all,it would sure be a lot cheaper than what your doing now, good luck on it.

I don't know about the clunk, but if her Intrepid has a 2.7 V6 in it, it's time to sell the car. The motor is running on borrowed time. These things fail notoriously at 80,000 miles. Don't sink a bunch of money into it.

It maybe bushings in the control arms when they wear it'll have play at where the control arms are mounted and when you hit bumps, accelerate, and making turns, it'll make clunking noises. The shop never checked all the bushings?

Sway bar links. Grab the car fender above the front wheel. Shake the car up and down. See if you can hear the clunking sound. If so. go under the car and put your finger tip on the sway bar. If you feel the clunking, it is the sway bar links.

Sounds like the universal joints. These are the joints where the drive shaft attaches to the axle. There are U-joints on either end. I can't believe the shop didn't check this first.

Struts was the first thing that came to my mind. Take it to a different garage and have them test the struts again.

Struts would have been my first guess, but since you say they were replaced I would check the engine and transmission mounts for clunkiness. Good luck!

we've got the same clunk..... have changed out the steering rack and pinion, struts, tie rods, greased bearings, etc.... nothing fixes it.... it's better when it's hot out, really awful when it's cold.... it can be felt all the way thru the steering wheel?.... ours has done it four years now.... but it's really getting bad now, as the steering wants to wander around.....

one thing that help ours was when they tightened the motor mounts.... might check there, too....

and if you find a fix, please email me, too!!!... ???.....
