It's as good as any for the dog. One generally just selects the gimmicks that appeal to you then compare prices to decide what is the best dog food for the owner.

My spouse used to be a Nutro rep. and "nutrition" expert a la Nutro training. She quit after Nutro changed their formula for their foods adding soy to the product in many blends, and then later, was horrified to see that most Nutro products were manufactured thru Menu Foods when it was supposed to be "in house" processing from what she was told. She had also been told it was human grade meat used, blah blah blah. What she learned was all these companies LIE and the best you can do is get the best product per the actual listed ingredients on the bag. Nutro uses CORN GLUTEN and other gluten in some of it's product. They explain that it is the gluten, the tip in the corn on the inside like as if that is special when it actually used the same crap that came over in containers from third world countries and was used in over a hundred products including NUTRO which has been one of the majorly recalled foods. Dick Van Patten's NATURAL BALANCE guaranteed their food content was all USA product with the exception of LAMB and VENISON from New Zealand. Well, turns out they had some of the contaminated third world product in the mix.
Nutro may say they are the only food that guarantees healthy skin and coat. They use this as an advertising gimmick because of some test run by TX A&M which fed dogs Nutro and who knows what brand of other food and then a comparison showed an improvement in coat when feeding Nutro. Wonder what the dogs were fed by comparison. Ol Roy? Who knows. Ask a Nutro Rep and I'll bet they can't tell ya. I would say their Ultra is a good product compared to many other commercial brands and compared to all other Nutro blends. I would feed Ultra to my dogs. But I wouldn't feed any other Nutro products. I'd think hard about switching to Ultra from Wellness. See what the price and availability of Canidae is by comparison but keep on Wellness if at all possible. Check with Canidae website and their "store locator" feature to see who sells it and for how much in your area. I think it is closely comparable to what you would be paying for Ultra.
I still think you should keep your dog on Wellness though if the few bucks more is possible for you.

Nutro Ultra Holistic food is super. I happen to be a pet nutritionist for Nutro. It is the only dog food in America that garentees a heathy skin and coat. Also go to nutroproduct.com for more information and go under the frequent buyer icon for coupons. NO Max and Natural Choice dry food was NEVER on the recall list. That is because Nutro owns 2 factorys that only NUTRO dry products are made.

I was feeding my Border Collie Nutro Natural for the better part of 2006. We boarded her over Christmas and 4 days after we returned she became very, very ill and we had to put her to sleep. It was so tough. Still to this day we don't know if it was from boarding her or the dog food. It was the dry, but the timing seems too coincidental. We have since rescued and I am transitioning her to a raw diet, so I don't have to worry about feeding my dog commercial products.

I would avoid Nutro... It has rice 3 times in the top 5 ingredients.... That means you are primarily feeding your dog rice. You could do that without buying dog food.
Wellness is definitely the better choice of foods. If you can spend the money, then I would go with the Wellness.
Good luck.

I asked about nutro here recently and got a few replies saying it's junk. However, a vet tech at my vet's says she feeds her dogs nutro and its the best in her opinion(and science diet is the food my vets office pushes, so she was beinghonest). But I am very happy with Innova.

The ultra is a fine food. However, I do not like their Natural Choice or Max lines. Both were involved in the pet food recall and contain ingredients that I would consider questionable.
