Everyone is an atheist to 10,000 gods and goddesses. If you think you have picked the right one, you should be able to answer most of the questions raised here. Otherwise don't tell me you know your god.
It is not our job to take religions away from other people. We just want people to know what they are believing.

I'm with mushy001. Although I practised the religion of my parents, I don't think there was ever a time when I truly believed in God. I recall being agnostic, but not theist.
As far as being compassionate, I am generally a kind and civilised person. However, when I'm trying to have a discussion on biology or astrophysics, and someone starts talking about the Bible (which happens quite often), it gives me perfectly good reason to be rude to the person in question.

I think many of us started out as compassionate and understanding. Staying here makes you callous. It has something to do with giving the same answers over and over.

I don't know if most atheists used to be theists, but the idea of promoting objectivity and understanding is good. Don't be too disapointed it will be lost on many.

I don't hate them, they may hate me. I try to be compassionate, but you have to understand, I get hate emails all the time. Frankly, they can believe what they want. It doesn't make a difference to me.

I guess I always questioned and did not have a mentor who talked to me about being an atheist. I had more people who were religious thinking I was crazy for questioning. But none of it makes any sort of sense to me for an intelligent person.

Thats probably never going to happen. Assumptions, Generalizations, and Criticism towards others beliefs will never stop. This applies to everyones beliefs. And when those things happen to me, I need to stand up for myself and everyone else.
