They have to give him a phone call within 72 hours so family can confirm he arrived. This call will only be about 30 seconds.

After that it will depend on the platoon. Usually Sundays are allowed for some personal time to make phonecalls, but depending on his Drill Sergeants, it may not take place until the 3rd Sunday he is there when Red Phase ends. Several things can contribute to this. If he gets in trouble with a Drill Sergeant, he may lose his phone call for the week. If his platoon as a whole preforms poorly during Red Phase, the entire platoon may lose thier phone call. Red Phase is weeks 1, 2 and 3.

The other question is, did he actually start Basic Trainin gon the 13th, or did he just go to the Reception Battalion on the 13th. He wont get that 72 hour phone call until his actual training cycle begins.

His first 3 days he will be at reception. Getting issued uniforms, ID Card, Dog Tags, getting shots, etc. But in the evening he should be able to call, if the lines at the phones aren't to bad. The first 3 weeks at basic will be pretty busy. But he should still have some down time on Sundays. So he should be able to call/write. I STRONGLY recommend that you write him and regularly. There is nothing that a soldier appreciates more then getting mail during mail call. He'll be home before you know for Christmas, oops, that politically incorrect, Winter exodus. Where he gets a 14-21 day break from training.

he gets ONE phone call when he first arrives to let family know he got there. after that, they must be earned, and some do not get any their entire time at Basic Training.. if one fellow recruit screws up, they all suffer.

He will call when his drill sargent says he can call and not before then. All you can do is wait, it's out of his hands.
