OK, here's the good and the bad. That toenail will NOT get better by itself. You should know that by now. It could have been caused by a million things, but more than likely it's the way the nail naturally grows or the way you cut it. The only thing to do now is go to the podiatrist. They will cut the nail out and put a solution on your toe that will make sure this does not happen again. The bad news...The shot they give hurts like sh*t!!!!!!!!!! I thought I was going to physically lift off of the examining table. The good news...It's a piece of cake after that, and man does it feel good to fix that nail.

If you can't trim it properly, see a Podiatrist.
A doc can do this with little or NO pain. It's not surgery.

It should be trimmed as much as you can down the side. Then it is critical that you stuff some cotton between the nail and skin to prevent skin from growing over the nail again.
The cotton should be twisted and left with a "tail" so it can be removed, and replaced as needed.
This is approximately what a doc will do.
Be sure to keep it clean, dry, and use some iodine to prevent infection. If that occurs, see a doc ASAP.

I attended school with a girl who's family did not believe in doctors. She had an ingrown nail, became infected.
She died.

When trimming toe nails, cut straight across, not down the sides.

Years ago, someone gave me this great, simple solution to PREVENT (don't really know about treating an existing ingrown nail....) ingrown toe-nails.

Using a sharp pair of small cuticle scissors, cut a shallow "V" into the center of the nail....along the outer edge only. This will cause the sides to pull/grow together, pulling it out of the sides. When I say shallow, I mean a very small "v", not into the quick at ALL, which could cause an infection.

Hope this helps!
