This is what it could solve:
1. Immigration issues and border patrol.
2. Drug trafficking.
3. Economic issues for both countries (instead of so much trade with China).
4. Better health care for them instead of fleeing their country for free health care that we end up paying for anyway.
5. Better education (instead Dad and Mom leaving children behind).
6. Our vacation money would be spent in our own country.
7. Not to mention some of our companies out sourcing.

Yes, it could solve some of these problems, but could also create some new problems. Of course, that has been the scenario through out history. All things will run their course, whether good or bad. If we pray about things and try to vote for the best possible leaders (if possible) we can. What will be will be. Good question.

1. It'd just move them south to the new border with Guatemala.
2. There's plenty of drug trafficking in America, that wouldn't chagne, either.
3. NAFTA already grants relatively free trade between the two countries relative to China.
4. Health care problems can be regional, there are places in America with good health care and with exceptionally poor.
5. Probably get stuck with bi-lingual education, which doesn't work as well as immersion.
6. I've never spent my vacation money in another country - rarely in another state. If you ever want to vacation to Mexico, come to CA, instead: it's nice here, and, though it's more expensive, at least you can drink the water.
7. Offshoring is not going to Mexico as heavily as it is to some asian countries.

Then, there's the whole issue of sovreignity. Some people feel really strongly about that. Unless you /want/ to fight an 'insurgency' in Mexico, that might be a consideration.

It is without doubt one of the worst ideas that I have ever heard! why on earth would a first world country like the US want to unite with a corrupt, third world country like Mexico. You'd have to be loco to believe that a North American union is a good idea for the US.

It would be great for Mexico, but a disaster for the US. Since I am an American, I want what is best for the US, not what is best for Mexico. Just look at what happened when East and West Germany united, it held back the economic growth of West Germany for years. Bad idea!

May as well. Many problems can be solved by that. A big concern is overpopulating the US land, but if we gain more land at the same time, then it would work out okay. Unfortunately, the majority of them don't like American's...they only want our resources, our economy and our assistance to the needy.

It wouldn't solve most of your list there.
1) Our immigration problem would then come from Belize instead of Mexico.
2) Drug trafficking is trafficking even if it's within your own borders.
3) Our economy would suffer trying to bring Mexico up to our standards.
4) Health care costs would skyrocket.
5) Our education would fall behind trying to find enough teachers & resources.
6) I agree with 6.
7) We would begin to outsource to South America.

I think there is something to the idea of "shared destiny" in the Western hemisphere. If things worldwide every really get out of hand, USA, Mexico and Canada may eventually be forced to band together to protect the last bastion of freedom and democracy in the world, especially if Communists (Chavez) take over South America and Muslims take over Europe (which is happening now in case you didn't know). A hundred or two years from now, I could see it happening.
(If that happens, everybody will speak Spanglish, and say "eh" every now and then.)

No, either side would not agree to your terms. Language would be the first stumbling block, and Mexico has been successful in their exporting their poverty and still keeping the wealth in the hands of 10% of the people, they got a great thing going why would they want to change it.

I do see your point and I asked the same question and I am all for it.

The people I asked said that would be great, but why would they? They don't have anything Americans want.

It would never work.

There isn't enough money in this country to correct all of the problems in a country where the population doesn't want to correct those problems. Just look at Iraq.

I think this is coming at some point soon (also merger with Canada). I'm not sure yet if this is good or bad! It depends on what form of government would result and whether (hopefully) it would be similar to what the US is like today. I would expect similar to the problems in the EU or Germany reunification, that there would be many rough patches at 1st anyways
