i went to donate blood for the first time today. i was a walk-in so i wasnt even expecting to donate today. So before i went i ate. Everything was fine during the whole process, but after the bag got filled i started feeling really hot and was ready to pass out. The nurse had to keep talkin to me to keep me up. Then they let me lay down for awhile. After that i walked back to work which was like a 2 block walk. Once i got here, I was ready to pass out again. Is it safe to drive home? and, what should i do to help myself feel better? Also i keep gettin real real hot and then real real cold. . . i have no idea whats going on. . . .I feel weak. . . idk if its just cuz it was my first time or wat

You should drink something that has sugar in it like juice or soda to get your blood sugar up and just rest.

You shouldn't drive until you're feeling better.

You definately need to be careful. Drink fluids to help replenish what you lost, like orange juice, fruit juice or water. The juices will help naturally raise your blood sugar level a little bit as well which can't hurt. You should most definately make certain you've had a light snack of protein base--not a candy bar--also before trying to drive. If you don't feel better after drinking and eating a bit again, then call for a ride home just to be sure. Good luck!

If you still feel like you are going to pass out then DON'T drive home. You should really eat something and also drink some juice or water. Try apple juice to get your blood sugar back up. You need to lie down, and take it easy. You really shouldn't have walked two blocks, I mean you just lost a pound of blood, so your body is trying to make more. Just take it easy and get your blood sugar back up by eating and drinking some juice.

It's probably because you are thinking the blood is alot and you know you only have a fixed amount. In other words it is all in your head. The average person has 8 GALLONS of blood i nthem at any given moment. You gave one PINT of blood today. There are 2 pints in a quart and 4 quarts in a gallon! You gave a VERY small amount of the toal and should not worry about it. Yes you can feel light headed and no you should not go out and play any physical sports tonight. You may need to eat soemthing, they should have offered you juice and cookies. A sugar rush will fix most things short term.

Your's was a common response to giving blood. Some of it physical and some mental. You should start feeling good real quickly. The tiny amount of blood that they took will not be missed for very long.

Yes you will feel weak, they just took a lot of your life fluid out of your body. Eat a good meal, don't drink and you should be fine. Sugar also helps, like cold drinks etc. Tomorrow you will be fine. The driving bit. Don't drive if you feel dizzy like.

It is normal to feel dizzy after donating blood. you need some rest and do not work to much today. drink some coffe and eat regular meal. you will be ok tomorrow. It only takes two weeks for your body to reproduce all the blood you have lost.

No it's not because it is your first time. Some people do not react well to a loss of blood. When you donate blood, its a mesaurable loss to your body and it is now missing that blood. In that blood was oxygen and nutrients that was supposed to go to your organs, muscles, bones and to carry out your bodily functions. It's like going to eat dinner and somebody taking it away and now you have to wait until morning to eat. So no, don't drive home, period. Eat foods with carbohydrates and drink a gatorade.

wow, i have not personally donated any blood, however i have not heard such extreme symptoms like the ones you are describing. I don't think you should drive, especially if you cannot stay awake!!! Use your best judgement and be careful because FYI - it takes about a month for your body to fully create new red blood cells.
