Ditto on all the other answers, but even if you call ahead make sure you get to the airport earlier to be the 1st one. I know this from experience. You may also have some passengers who don't like that there is an animal on the plane, but just ignore them. They apparently have never had the love from a pet. I WILL NEVER put a pet thru baggage. I've heard too many horror stories about that. Also you may want to contact a vet to get a mild tranquilizer for the dog so they are not too anxious, whimpering and causing problems on the plane. A stewardess just had the pilot kick a 16-month old and it's mother off of a plane because the child kept saying bye-bye! Give tranquilizer to the dog about 1/2 hour before boarding. Make sure you have it in a prescription bottle or envelope when you go thru security so it's not taken from you. Make sure you let the dog go potty as much as possible outside before you go thru security so it doesn't have a full bladder, etc. Do not give the dog water or too much food about two hours before flight so they are not uncomfortable, throw-up or do their duty while on board. And remember, the dog and carrier has to go thru the x-ray machine also. Good luck, safe trip and give that puppy a lot of love. They'll return it ten-fold in trust and loyalty!

Each airline has their own regulations. Delta's website says:
Pets As Carry On
Your pet can travel with you in the cabin for a one-way fee of $50 (to be collected at check-in) when traveling within the United States (except Hawaii), Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda. Pets permitted in the cabin include dogs, cats, birds, ferrets, rabbits, hamsters and guinea pigs. Monkeys, pot-bellied pigs, reptiles, frogs, mice, rats, sugar gliders, and spiders are not permitted. The following restrictions apply:
* Your pet must be small enough to fit comfortably in a kennel under the seat directly in front of you. Maximum carry-on kennel dimensions are determined by your flight. You must contact Delta Reservations to determine the appropriate kennel size.
* Your pet must remain inside the kennel (with door secured) while in a Delta boarding area (during boarding and deplaning), a Delta airport lounge, and while onboard the aircraft.
* Your pet must be at least 8 weeks old.
* You may not carry on more than one pet.
* Your pet in-cabin counts as one piece of carry-on baggage.
* If you're traveling to Hawaii, your pet won't be able to go with you in the cabin, and other restrictions may apply. See Pets to Hawaii for more information.
It also says only 2 pets are allowed in the main cabin, and "Pets are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis. Call Delta in advance at 800-221-1212 to arrange to bring your pet on board."

Under the seat in front of you. When I lived in Naples Fl. I always took my Min Pin to Chicago with me. I paid my fifty dollars and never had a problem. But today they may want all your money your blood type and a complete exam for your pet like an MRI or cat scan. Not to mention current paw prints.
Best bet and really the only way, call the air line for current information.
I had my dog with me so many times I tried to get her miles on her own millage plus card. ( United turned me down )
