I was in an ancient civilizations class a while ago, and we were talking about ancient egyptian religion. A VERY religious boy in my class scoffed and said "That's crazy! How could they have possibly thought all that was true?" I responded by saying "But you believe your religion is the 'true one' how is that different? I don't see how you can mock them when logic and history dictate that eventually your religion will be in the same position as their's is now" and he got all huffy and was like "Well, this IS the only true religion! The bible says so!" I was like, "well, I'm sure they had books that said the same thing, and said they were 'the word of god', and would find it just as hard to believe that you followed the bible, as you do their religion." He turned all red and yelled "Well, God says that this is THE ONLY TRUE RELIGION" so I left it at that. I shouldn't have even let it get that far, but he'd been really bugging me. Anyways, how does someone smart believe so blindly?

Fear. Blind faith is the result of fear. Fear of loosing hold of the one solid, constant thing in life. People don't want to have to work for things, they'd much rather have someone or something tell them what to believe.

Now of course this can work in just the opposite as well. If someone writes off all beliefs just because they can't be proven with science, they have narrowed the possibilities of life.

Believe or don't believe but know why. Don't allow religious text or scientific document to tell you what is or is not possible. Use knowledge, insight and feeling in combination for all things. At the crossroads of intellect and emotion is a small path that leads each of us to what we seek.

That's just it, it isn't blind. It appears to be blind because many do not believe it. But along with what they don't believe, they don't believe what Jesus said either.

The part of what Jesus said that has to do with believing is this:
7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

9 Of sin, because they believe not on me;

10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;

11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
(John 16)

The reason why we want to believe in the first place is because of this "Comforter". Jesus and the rest of the Bible make it clear that this Comforter, Jesus, and the Father work to perform the same end, to draw certain people into the knowledge of who He is, what we are supposed to be doing.

Those who do not have that proof are without proof. And they THINK that we are following blindly; all of us Christians.

But we are not, we are actually just poor communicators of this fact, because we struggle with our own doubt.

But that's why we believe, because God put the desire to believe in Him in us. That is why we can say in all truth," Glory to God" , because He is the one who initiated all of this. We believe because He gave us to ability to believe.
