im hoping to study medicine at university, but im not sure exactly what type of doctor i want to be..not a surgeon, but i am interested in the brain... what sort of doctors are there that would be a possibililty for me? i am predicted mostly A's and A*'s for my gcses, so considering that, and the levels of study involved for the different branches of medicine, what would you suggest as a possible career choice??

You don't choose a specialty until after medical school, so I'd suggest getting that out of the way first. During your medical education, you'll be exposed to most of the specialties, and will be in a much better position to make an intelligent choice.

You could try neurology, but here in the US, all the neurologists I've ever met are just plain weird. (If you're weird in the same way, you'll fit in fine.)

You'll find the type of people you want to work with and the kind of work you like doing when you get onto the wards and actually do it.

Good luck in your studies.

My experience with neurologists differs from Pangolin's. Every field has its eccentrics. Otherwise she is correct. You will be exposed to many different career options in medical school. Take time to think of yourself practicing in a particular field as you rotate through the various specialties and clinics. Talk to the docs on your service. Talk to the patients. Your thoughts may change with each rotation. Even in residency many physicians choose to sub-specialize or even enter unrelated fields.

When you are in your third and fourth years, examine your feelings very carefully. As a student I hated geriatrics. Five decades later, I sure am glad there are those who like the field.

Neurologist, or you can simply be a scientist-physician, who does research on specific disease in order to better understand it and hopefully find a cure, if you're into gigantic science projects =)

Neurologists treat and diagnose patients...

You can always specialize in a certain brain disorder, such as alzheimer's or asperger's.

If you want to avoid surgery, then tons of other things you can do =)

God luck in your career choice. You will have a lot of years of studying ahead. Apply for each and every job to continue your career. Suck up to each consultant or else your career will grind to a halt as he /she will write your next reference. Feel constantly tired. wake up at all shitty hours to replace a cannula in a patients arm. Enjoy being in court after being sued - as a patient is pissed off with 1 remark you said. Enjoy telling patients they will be dead in 6 - 8 weeks...... its a shitty job at times, but enjoy it. DON'T let me put you off.
