The boy is preteen and they live far from me. I can't bring myself to mouth platitudes at my friend but I feel lost as to what she and her son need.

Did you know that scoliosis is something that can be corrected by seeing a chiropractor? Yes, indeed! It will work too, much better than the other options, mostly surgery and pain. My 15 year old daughter has it too and she sees a chiropractor. Her condition has been corrected greatly and will eventually be completely corrected and her spine straightened like normal. This friend of yours may not put any stock in chiropractors, but my daughter is living proof that this sort of treatment works. Please at least tell your friend about this possibility and maybe they will at least consult with a doctor of chiropractic care and save their son multiple surgeries in his future. It will help and it might be completely corrected this way. God Bless you for caring=)

it depends on how serious it is.. but doctors and chiropractors and no diving head first into water. And I think those U-shaped pillows help cradle the head so as to not compound the problem. My brother has had mild scoliosis his whole life ... it really hasn't bothered him too much because he's never let it.
