no, it absolutely would not.
but then again,
if someone asked for or even needed minimal help
for no reason so dramatic as a natural disaster,
i would help them, anyway.

Moon, not ONLY a natural disaster, ANY kind of trouble and ALL peole of ALL faiths and walks of life come together.
On (-11-01 ALL Americans came together to help out the vistims, their families. They ALL came together in op[position to terrorism. Not ONLY Americans came together over that but the entire WORLD stood up with ONE voice and condemned that action. George Bush took all of that and tossed it away like it was so much useless trash. He could have done anything necessary to kill or capture Osama, instead he spent that goodwill in trying to get back at someone who had NOTHING to do with 9-11.
The same with Katrina, SO many people lost their lives and the survivors lost everything they owned. Yet again, Bush wasted all that money, compassion, and caring trying to make 20 second "feel good" sound bites for himself and his Administration. Meanwhile, the Lower Mississippi area is still suffering from the devastating effects of that storm of YEARS ago.
What KIND of disaster will it REALLY take for there to be a truly lasting unification of us all? ONe that will completely and irrevocably bring us together as ONE people? Modern Civilization has FAR too short of an attention span to have such feelings be sustained for very long, I'm afraid. It's going to take something HUGE to bring us togehter in the way that you are hoping and I for one, hope that it doesn't happen simply because of the major shock and death and destruction that it wil take for it to come about.
No, we need something else, another idea that has yet to be tried. I have NO idea what it may be, but: it's certtainly needed now, more than ever before.

I've found that it doesn't take a disaster to unite people.
I'm friends with a huge variety of people from many walks of life. The fact that I'm a gay atheist etc etc etc has never mattered at all unless it happens to come up in conversation; and even then, if we've already established a rapport, it still doesn't matter (usually). On a personal level, all our petty theoretical bigotries cease to be important.

Absolutely true and right on moondown!!! We forget our differences, and we bond together to save the injured, to lift that heavy board that is trapping a baby in a basement, to swim out into rushing rivers to save a kid who can't swim.....
I' getting choked up tying this. We DO these things because we are all HUMAN BEINGS with a common bond that NO RELIGION OR DIFFERENCES OF RACE CAN DISSOLVE. We are the same, flesh, bone and spirit in this crazy dangerous, heavenly world that can destroy without notice.
An then, the dust settles, and we find that the bond we shared during those terrifying hours may fade, it may not, but it is a reminder to us that we are truly one race, the human race.
Bright Blessings, wonderful question sister!

You would be utterly disgusted to know there are people who care during those disasters too.
But mostly you're right. It's sad that it takes pain, death, and suffering to bring us together as a human race.
