The reason I'm asking is that my parents next door neighbours are burning it and it's giving off an awful smell, and quite dense smoke.
I'd be greatful for any help on this as we need to ask them to burn something else.

Yes, that's what I thought too. But my Dad says that it smells like bitumin. The wood came from an old tree they (the neighbours) cut down in their garden. Maybe they just need to let it season before burning it.

Unless it is chemically treated, it shouldn't have any chemicals in it. It's a natural wood. The dense smoke is probably because it is too green and the smell, I don't know for sure. Maybe that's why they don't sell willow wood commercially.
