Jesus said it at the Sermon on the Mount. It seems like a significant verse to me. What did he do to "light up" those ordinary people? Did he teach them how to worship in spirit? Did he already give them the Gift of God? My reference: middle chapters at http://gospelenigma.com

He spoke to them and gave them the word for them to pass on to others. Have you ever been to a ceremony where you start out with one candle lit and then from there another is lit and then two are lit and four and so on. It is the same with spreading of the Holy Word.

Here's a link to one of my favorite hymns "Brightly Beams Our Father's Mercy" It talks about how Jesus is a lighthouse and we need to be the lower lights. When a ship is entering a cove or harbor at night, they need to avoid the reefs and shallows. The Lighthouse is up on a hill away from the water and then there are lights down on the shore. When the "lower lights" are directly under the lighthouse as seen from the ship, they can follow that path to dock safely. If our lives are in tune with the gospel then other can follow us.

In context it continues: Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

He intends for us to be examples. To light the world with our love for Him. Do good and the give the glory to Heavenly Father.
