I always thought it was a part of Europe. Jut like I may live in Utah but it is still considered the United States

If you mean due to the fact the the UK is spread around the world, with the few colonies that they have left, probably is cause Great Britain is what comes to mind when you think UK.
If you mean that Great Britain is not in Europe, then you are geographically impared.

it may not be on the mainland (since the ice age, anyway), but it is part of Europe.
