You can plant a flag anywhere you like. It doesn't mean it's your territory.

The North Pole has been claimed by Russia, Norway, Denmark, and Canada. The issue is not settled yet.

There have been specific treaties saying "nobody can own the moon" and "nobody can own antarctica" - but there hasn't been one for the arctic.

However, as the arctic is essentially a sea, then I believe the standard "no more than 200 miles out" rule should apply to it, Russia can have anything in the ocean that's 200 miles away from Russia - but that's as far as it goes.

STrangely, the U.S. and other countries have negotiated non-ownership pacts over space, antarctica, and the open oceans. However, nothing has been negotiated over the arctic. The Law of the Sea which excludes seabed ownership will probably stop Russia from enforcing their claim; but there is not treaty limiting ownership like there is with the Moon or Antarctica.

Apperantly you don't actually have to set foot on land to claim its yours, you just need to get your flag there. After all, the Russians sank the flag to the bottom of the Arctic ocean and now they're claiming it. I guess they can also claim the Moon, since they were the first to reach it by probe (which was stamped with their flag of course) long before American astronauts landed.

Oil. Supposedly there's a heck of a great sort of oil below the North Pole. Which united states gets to drill for it, use it, sell it. The Russians planted this flag & now think of each and all of the substances down there are theirs for the taking. the worldwide is understanding of oil. of direction the respond is an potential coverage that makes use of possibilities, yet oil is uncomplicated, and we are all lazy.

of course the moon is u.s. territory. and when nasa can get off it's **** and get some crap up there to build an air force base and equip it with our latest x-band anti missle defense technology, the u.s. will in essence control the earth-moon gravity well and thus control all traffic into or away from earth.
