It depends on what it was.
For example, if it was the last auk egg, I would hide it so that stupid people wouldn't eat it.
But that's been said and done already, I'm afraid.
It depends on if that thing would be destroyed if shared, and if it had its own life/existence.
I am just thinking of all those movies where someone has something really valuable(but practically useless) and everyone tries to get it(like, say, a diamond). I would prefer not to if the revealing of it would cause more strife than pleasure.
How did I get it? Did I work hard for it? Do I deserve to keep it? Like, if it is some of the best cake ever, a wee little slice, that I climbed a mountain for, I'd probably keep it for myself. I worked for it, I should get it. If, on the other hand, it is something BIG like, say, a device to communicate with other beings(millions of light years away, on a different plane of existence) than I think it wouldn't be right to keep it to myself. Thats not to say I wouldn't be careful about who I let see it. BIG things like that can be dangerous in the wrong hands.

My three-year-old nephew got a toy keyboard for his birthday. He thought it was the greatest thing ever and wanted to share his special gift with all of us. The rest of the neighborhood really really hated the toy keyboard and wanted it to SHUT UP. It's all a matter of perception.
