from parasites..mostly fleas, ticks and mosquitoes.

The flea bites a dog with heartworms, the eggs for the heart worms are in the blood, the flea jumps to another dog and bites it. The blood from the infected dog gets passed to the new one.

That is why it is so unbelievably important to keep your dog on flea, tick and heart worm preventatives.

Heart-worm is spread from dog to dog by mosquitoes. The mosquito bites the infected dog and ingests the microscopic larvae of the hart-worms along with the blood it came after.

The mosquito carrying the larvae the bites a new dog and some of the larvae escape through the mosquito's proboscis into the new dog's bloodstream These larvae then travel to the heart where they set up shop.

It used to be that heart-worms were pretty much a death sentence - in that the cure was often as bad or worse than the illness itself. Nowadays, however, with annual testing and preventative medicines plus newer treatments, heart worms, if detected early, can be cured and the dog can then live out a good, healthy normal life.

The key is annual exams and monthly prevention treatments.
