And I don't blame her. Years ago people use to have a little something called "common courtesy". Good lord, it is totally and completely rude to speak in a language right in front of someone you know good and well that they can't understand a word of it. I only hope your wife will go to the owner and let them know of this problem.
And no, in answer to the first person to answer this question. Your wife is not racist, there was no racist insinuation in your question at all. :]

No - but what is being done is rude.
If you are in a professional setting, and you ask someone a question (providing they speak English well) and they don't answer in English - that is rude. It is even rude to carry on a conversation in English w/a co-worker while waiting on a client.
It is rude to have a friend over who doesn't speak a language other than English and carry on a covnersation in say, Spanish, leaving your English-speaking friend in the dark. If they must covnerse in Spanish, one should at least translate what was just said (mayne they can't speak English well enough to get thier point accross).

It depends, can they speak english well, is she sure they are talking about her, or could they be translating for somoen who has weak english skills?
I lived in another country once, it was very hard as I didn't speak the langaude well. People getting annoyed just makes the problem worse as I got anxious. When they took their time and were slow and understanding we suceeded in getting the point across.
Show some patience, it may not be about her.

no, it doesn't annoy me. What if a person who spoke Chinese got their nails done in the presence of your wife, would she speak English? that's kind of prejudice.
I am growing up in a multicultural town, and i've always had friends of all races.
On the flip side it is mean when people speak it on purpose to make someone who doesnt speak it left out... it's happened before at my place. if there is translating going on then it's fine, but just to gossip is MEAN

Actually, it is rude to speak another language in front of someone who does not speak it. You are pretty much saying to that person, you are invisible and are not worth talking to. An exception might be if one of the other people do not speak English. Otherwise it is bad manners.

no it doesnt bother me at all..my ex bf (and best friend) speaks arabic when hes with his family and even though i speak very little arabic (and what i can say is not something u should ever say to someones parents!!) i think its a beautiful language and i think its good that people arent ashamed of where they come from and they are proud of their heritage...one of my professors at school speaks italian fluently so we will talk to each other in a combination of italian and english and no one seems to get offended by it...its all in the context that they are talking..if u were speaking french it wouldnt annoy me however if u were spekaing french while pointing and laughing and making obscene gestures then id be a little pissed off

no, why should it? Unless, of course, you are insecure, or you understand the language and the speakers are talking ill of you.
That happened to me. I speak italian, french, german, spanish (and english, of course). Once, when I was being fitted for a suit at a tailor's shop, the tailor was insulting me in italian to his assistant, saying that I had an ugly body and he hoped the suit fitted me properly. They both laughed. I responded in italian, in kind, saying that I was going to take my business elsewhere. I lost the 300 dollar deposit I made, but it was worth it to see the look on the guys face.

think of it this way, does it annoy you when people whisper in front of you. say if you are with your friend and another person began to whisper in his ear so that you can't hear what they are saying. that is rude and annoying isn't it. well its the same thing when someone is speaking in another language around a friend or client that does not speak the language it is the same as whispering and it is disrespectful.
