It depends on the medication. Some melds are supposed to be taken on an empty stomach. Some melds want you to take them with food and milk.
Most prescribed medications will have labels on the side of the bottle. If they don't, ask the pharmacist and they can tell you.
Over the counter medications will have the directions written on the side of the bottle or there will be instructions on the inside of the box.

Varies with type of pills. Antibiotics need lots of water, especially for urinary tract infection. It should tell you in the papers you get from the pharmacy how to take it. Some don't mix with grapefruit. Some should be taken on an empty stomach. Some should be taken with food or milk. Ask your pharmacist when you get a new medicine.

Some drugs cause gastric irritation (like interfering with mucus production in your stomach)--these types you take either during or right after eating. Other drugs you ought to take before a meal. It all depends on its mode of action. Safest thing for you to do is ask your Doctor and/or read the drug literature ;)
