When looking at purchasing a vehicle there are several questions you must answer...First geographic location...do you live in a city, in the country, in a warm year round climate, a 4 season climate or 2 season climate...then how much do you have to spend on this vehicle, and do you have to pay for your own insurance. All of those you need to know before you ever consider purchasing a vehicle. For a person living in a city and you have a winter (with snow) you would want a car with front wheel drive. For a person living in the country with a winter (with snow) you would want a SUV with 4 wheel drive and syped tires. Next question is monitary. If you are on a limited budget better get an older vehicle but nothing older than 12 years as they start to become undependable for everyday driving unless taken extra special care of (very rare to find). Next the insurance question. If you are paying for you own insurance and you have never had a policy with your name on it before expect higher rates than that of someone who has had insurance for years. Also if you have had tickets or accidents that plays a huge roll into premiums. I would reccomend calling an insurance company to get a quote on the top 5 cars or SUV's of your choice. The top car brands out there are Mazda, Toyota, Subaru, Buick, Honda and Mercury. The Top SUV brands right now are Chevy, Dodge, Toyota, and Honda. These brand have the top quality and durability rating right now. If you do not have a lot of passengers or children riding with you enjoy a coupe (two doors) but for more passengers or children be sure to get a sedan (four doors)....Good Luck and Congratulations on a new car.

Try and pick up a used 4 door sedan with a 4 cylinder engine and automatic tranny; something you can afford to drive and pay for. Get used to the care and feeding of a car and develop a feel for what kind of vehicle you need for the use you give one. A used vehicle has taken the big hit in depreciation and the smell of new plastic isn't worth the price we pay for it.

I suggest a smaller car with good gas milage considering our current price of gas. Maybe a honda civic or dodge neon. Plus they both have really good crash ratings.
