When you are a christian it is important to baptize. You are promising to raise your children up with the knowledge of Our Lord and raise them in church. Then later on when they grow up, depending on your religion, they can do an affirmation of faith or be baptized again. I hope this helps you out!

Most Christian religions (Catholic and Protestants) believe that is required to be allowed into heaven or saved. Catholics often do it when the child is an infant (they call it a Christening). I grew up in a Methodist church and they did it when I was a baby (I think also refered to as a Christening). (Christening and Baptism have the same concept). Some denominations, though, don't allow it until the child is older and can understand what it means: a commitment to believe in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior for the rest of your life. I kind of agree with waiting because it doesn't really mean anything if the child has no idea the depth of the commitment. You also have to believe that God is the only God, and that Jesus was born of the Virgin Mary and that he died for our sins (at least, those were the vows required when I was baptized, I don't know if all denominations are the same). Some even require speaking in toungues, but not most. Hope that helps.

Do you mean babies or adults?
Some denominations are in the way of baptising infants due to their interpretation of the bible.
Others feel that you need to be baptizes as your choice and there infants and young children would be excluded. I happen to believe in this way and therefore my children will make that choice for themselves.
In a general sense - you are baptized after you declare you faith in Jesus. It is a "rebirth" as a Christian - old life to new, if you will.

Baptizing your baby is personal preference. Baptism represents a "cleansing" in most religions. I am religious but chose not to baptize my children because I feel that the cleansing is not meant for an innocent child which God sees as already pure. I believe that baptism should be used when the person is old enough to know that they are sinners and want to be cleansed.

This is definitely the wrong age for this question. Either get the baby baptized by 4 months or wait until it's school-aged. The separation anxiety and self-conscious phases make it awful for the kids--and the congregation.
As for why, ask the pastor of the church you attend.
If you don't attend or want to attend one, I personally don't think you should be baptized. You join a community as well as make a personal decision. Parents ask the church fellowship to help them raise their child in love and faith. Don't do that if you're not going to be around; it's hypocritical.

To cleanse the body of original sin, and ensure that babies and young children go to heaven if something should happen. Also, to establish a relationship between the church(religion) and the child.
