Maybe you are opening the document in the wrong format. If you are trying to open a Word Document (.doc) in Notepad, you generally will get weird formatting characters. Maybe you don't have the program you need to read that file?

The program that is was typed in is not compatable with the program you are trying to open it with. Example. MS word vista will not work on word 2000 unless you save it in the special 1995-2000 format.

I assume you see weird characters or question marks all over. This is likely due to an invalid format (like renaming a picture from picture.jpg to picture.txt, or you do not have a foreign language driver installed on your computer.)
Visit microsoftupdate.com if you're on a Windows computer and see if there are any updates that can help.
