I know that you used to be able to use your active duty military ID as a passport. Has this changed with all of the new passport laws???

When I got orders to Japan, no passport was required to enter the country, just an ID card and orders. When going on leave to another country, a passport was needed to get in to that country. Things may have changed since then, this was over 10 years ago.

Also to add...we need to have a SOFA (Status of Forces Agreement) with the country...there are only a few countries that you can use your ID on Official Business...Korea, Germany, Italy and a few others, but you have to check in with the Military "Customs"...if you have to go to another country on Official Business, the Government will give you a different Passport... I think it is green or red...it is not blue like the regular ones...

You can if you are traveling with orders (military leave or PCS orders). If you are a spouse of a military member, you have to use your passport whenever you travel.

For military members-if you aren't, then you will have to use your passport to travel.

Generally you cannot anymore. Once you are in the country and have orders, you dont need to carry it, but you usually have to have it to get in a country.

They prefer you have a tourist passport, but will give an official passaport if needed.

Again, it varies according to the country you're going to!
