Anyone have a Siamese? I have an 11-week old seal point who is just the sweetest little girl. I've never had a Siamese before and I was just wondering how others act. Mine likes to talk A LOT. And she likes being babied.

Mags, what breed did you end up getting?

I have 2 Siamese kitties and I can tell you you have made a wonderful choice! My older Kitty (Isis) is a Blue Point and is 9 years old. She is totally crazy. Only a little over 6 pounds and she rules the house, and is not afraid to put her "little brother" (Orion, Seal Point, 5 years old) in his place. I say little, but he is just over 14 pounds. In my experience, females are much more vocal, as well as "high-strung". Everything is on her terms. When she wants to be petted, she will come just within fingers reach, and then make you come the rest of the way to pet her. She is the most loyal kitty and during those times my husband makes me mad, or hurts my feelings, Isis looks at him like she could rip him apart. It is very common for Siamese to bond closely to 1 family member (I don't say owner because you will see shortly, the Siamese owns you!) and this is the case with our 2. Isis is always at my feet and Orion is a daddy's boy. Males are much more layed-back. Orion is really more like a dog then a cat. Both are very vocal, but females much more so. Wait until you start noticing all the things they say. One of my favorite's is when they see a bird or little critter outside they make the cutest little "churping sound" (mine are in-door only cats. The one time they got out, Orion promptly climbed up a 30 foot tree and got stuck, and Isis got into a fight with a female stray cat and was bitten). My female is also much more brave then my male. She often ends up defending him....

siamese cats are very vocal. they love to talk and communicate. they are very friendly kitties. They are very intelligent - which does not necessarily mean that they are easy to train. Each cat has a different personality - some, if you tell them "No" once, will desist from the activity forever, while those with the more mischievous natures, though they know it's forbidden, will merely wait until you're not around, and then do it anyway. :-) Many Traditional Siamese are quite adept at teaching humans the game of fetch or other tricks. Some cats will readily learn to walk on a harness and leash. These behaviors are far more successful if introduced at an early age. When there are no people around, they like to be up high, and can often be found on the top of bookcases, refrigerators, or curio cabinets. If you can't find your cat, look up. It's probably best to keep any breakables off of high shelves.

Some Siamese cats engage in a practice that denizens of rec.pets.cats have dubbed "smurgling", wherein the cat holds a piece of material, usually a blanket or sweater (but sometimes human skin), in its paws and kneads it, while happily sucking and/or drooling on it. The eyes are often glazed over, and the cat is usually purring loudly. This is not a serious disorder. ( :-) for the humor-impaired.)

Yes definitely especially the shoulder riding habit and being very affectionate, but those behaviours also are like many other cats. but that's not to say that I think personality has nothing to do with breed; maybe for some breeds it is less pronounced but Siamese are one of the major examples of a breed having its own kind of personality (generally speaking. they tend to have certain qualities like being very vocal / communicative, interactive, wanting/needing human attention, loyal to their people, uncannily intelligent and resourceful, etc. But it doesn't mean they're all identical or that no non-Siamese can share some of those qualities .) but Café M is correct that there are many cats with pointed markings who are colloquially called (and even sold as) "Siamese" although they may have scarcely any Siamese in them and it's possible they have none at all. If it matters, one way to tell is the coat: a real Siamese has a very short, close-lying topcoat and no undercoat (they did originate in a tropical climate). Another way is the voice which is very distinctive, often compared to a baby's cry and can be much lower pitched than many cats. I've had both pedigreed and some rescued Siamese mixes and loved them all. Sounds like you have a very fun and sweet girl.... and you might have to put her in another room when you're having dinner.

Hm.....Can I answer this even if I don't own any? I'll tell you the reasons I picked another breed, even though I adore the (traditional) siamese look........

They are present. First and foremost!
They'll always let you know they're there.
They're quite dependent by nature- they want to be with their owners all the time.
They're talkative - most siamese just LOOOOOVE to hear themselves chat, and have entire conversations with their humans. Their voices are louder than most breeds'
They're energetic- there's no breed that has as much energy, and probably even agility, as siamese......
They're clingy - if not with their human, they love to sleep in a pile with other cats. They hate being alone.
They're curious- they need to supervise everything and anything you're doing.
They love to be the center of attention. They'll demand attention if not given to them voluntarily.
They're very very intelligent.

So an absolutely adorable breed - but a little too much "cat" for me ;)

A small word of warning. Please get your baby fixed before she has her first heat (if possible). My siamese baby (6months) is just about finished her 2nd cycle (two weeks apart) and she is impossible to live with. Think of an average cat's heat yowling and multiply it by the talkativeness of a siamese...it's a nightmare.

But I love my kitty. She goes in 3 weeks for her surgery. Thank goodness. I don't think my husband will put up with too many more night time chat (more like yell) sessions.

Anyway enjoy your kitty. They are purr-fect little princesses. Mine is so gentle. My 4 year old loves to pack her around and Miss Kitty does nothing but talk to me. It sounds like she's telling me to make my daughter put her down. Like right now.

You are so lucky to have a Siamese who loves to be babied. Continue to cuddle and love her as much as possible, so she'll stay that way. I've had Siamese for over 20 years, and a lot of them are so independent that they only want to be held on THEIR terms. I love them anyway, but cuddling isn't always their first inclination. YES......they're the most talkative of all of the cats, as far as I know. They'll tell you when they're hungry, want loving, need their litterbox changed, and will argue with you when you reprimand them! They're the most wonderful cats in the world..........Lucky you!

Yeah, sounds like a typical Siamese to me. That breed is known for being particularly haughty and selfish, and is very chatty.

I have three siamese. Different types. They all seem to act as though they rule the house. All I do is feed them. I love them to death, but most of the time they don't seem to love me.
