when my puppies were around 8 weeks we started them off on cold cooked porridge and scrambled egg.
then we slowly added biscuits (especially made for young puppies) to the egg and porridge

Okay well i just purchased a Pomeranian puppy when it was 8 weeks of age and i fed it dry food. I used the special puppy recipe. The worst thing you can do at this time is moisten the dry food. The hardness of the dry food helps clean teeth and get them accustomed to chewing and using their teeth.
I think you should keep them on one dry puppy food until they reach adulthood in which you can ease them into a new type of food. I hope this helps.

Many shih-tzu are allergic to MANY things. Look for a good quality puppy food WITHOUT corn, wheat, and soy.
Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance (available at Petco) has none of these things and is recommended for dogs of all ages.

They should be fed puppy dry food designed for them, you may want to soften the kibbles by mixing them with a small amount of warm water.

You can give them canned food but you want to give them crunchy food as well, it helps to keep their teeth strong. I suggest to mix a little moist food with the hard food. That way they enjoy the canned food but get the benifits from the crunchy food. Be careful what brands you but though to make sure there safe for your dog. Your best bet is to go to a pet store and ask what food is best. You will spend a little more money but its worth it for the benifit of your dogs health.
