I just thought i'd ask this, as i've always wondered. Im from Ireland, and I always wanted to work in the U.S in the police department. Is that possible? or do you have to be a full American citizen?

While most police departments require US citizenship, it is untrue that all do.

In Colorado, both Lakewood and Arvada (metro Denver) allow legal residents of the US to be sworn officers. Think LPD has about 5 and Arvada 2.

Being a legal resident means you are legally in the US, with full residency and employment priviledges.

So you would have to be in the US legally, before you could even apply.

Good luck

Try the Colorado State Patrol, I went through the academy with a former cop from Glasgow, Scotland who was a legal resident and not a U. S. citizen (I still couldn't understand him even after 6 months). That was 25 years ago but I don't think the policy has changed. Google Colorado State Patrol website and see.

I cannot speak for all parts of the US, but in the state of Georgia you will have to be a US citizen before you can be employed as a peace officer. I know a woman from Manchester, England who has been a cop for years...but she is a naturalized US citizen.

You might consider checking with each state, but I suspect you will get similar answers in most places.

A way that you can fast track your citizenship into the US is to join any of the US millitary branches. I know of a couple of people who joined the US Army to become US citizens (one from Ireland and another from Argentina).

Good luck!

You'd have to be a citizen. However, I wouldn't be surprised if you found relatives in many big city departments. Irish and Italians seem to have gravitated to Police departments since the late 1890's.

In my case, they got both plus some Scot thrown in.

If you were a Policeman in Ireland, I wouldn't be surprised if you were able to come to the US and be " assigned" to a department in some type of exchange program.

Wish you luck in this endeavor in any event.

You will have to become a full fledged American citizen. But once you do that, you have to attend a police academy, pass some physical and mental evaluations and then you can work as a police officer.
