What's up is the equivalent to What's going on? or What is happening? It is used similarly to How are you? to give a greeting or start a conversation.
If there is nothing just reply by saying "nothin, what's up with you" or "not much, how about you". If you are just passing each other in a hall this is the common reply because if there is something going on it should wait until there is time for an actual conversation. If you both are not busy then him asking this question is an invitation to tell him what is going on in your life or any news that you received recently that is about an event you are/were looking forward to as an answer to his question and after you share your update ask him "so, what's up with you?" or "how about you?".
Ex:
him: "What's up"
you: "You'll never guess what?"
him: "What is it man"
you: "I finally got to go to a(n) (band's name) concert/performance last night!"
him: "That's cool! Did you have a good time?"
you: "Yeah, it was awesome! I can't wait to see them again! How about you man?"
him: "Yo, this....."
A good response to What's up could really make for an interesting conversation.

90% of the time, you get the answer of "nothing"
What's up? or as some people say "Sup", means What is going on? It is just another way to say Hello.
I will say things like, The rent, the market. But not too often, just something to break the habit of saying nothing. And on the rare occasion that I just heard something inportant, then I will just tell them the news instead.
Just whatever you want to say. It's all good.

What's up? Oh, nothin' man...just gas prices... Or you could say, "nothin' except my blood pressure" Or you could really freak them out and say "Nothin' except opposition to this crazy war! What's your opinion on that subject?" They'll come up with another greeting soon, believe me...or walk the other way when they see you coming....lol.

Yes, it's another word for "Hi" or "Hey how ya doin?"
You can say:
Nothing
Nothing much
Not a lot
Nothing, you?
Nothing much, you?
Not a lot, you?
Rough day, you?
Lot's, you?
Lot's.
Don't get me started, you?
Don't get me started
You get the idea. It's a grunt acknowledging your presence in a friendly manner. It's rhetorical, and not that complicated.

Well if you want to get technical, what's up means "what are you up to?", but nowadays it can also mean "how's it going" because it's thrown around so much.
So, you could respond with "not much, nothing, just relaxing, doing (insert whatever you are doing" and so on.
It sounds odd to me to say "good, or bad "etc. but you can.

1.really tell "whats up" or whats going on with you
2. nothing or something to that effect.
3. "whats up back" (as in "hey!")
4. whats up with you?
5. wasssuuuppp!!
6. I don't know
7. Chillin'
"whats up" can mean: "whats up?", "hi" or "hey", "whats going on there?" (if you are somewhere and theres stuff going on around you), "how's life?", "how are you?", etc. It depends a lot on the context.

Tell me when you figure it out, please! I have friends who send me texts that say, "hey what's up?" ALL THE TIME> That's the only text he ever sends. I like this person, I want to keep in touch with him, but what on earth are we supposed to say to this??? I'm giving you a star! I've been wanting to know the answer to this a long time.

When some imbecile says to me "what's up?" I usually reply with "It's the opposite of down. Do you have any more questions?"
