Is it right or wrong for non Christians to used bible verses in an argument against a Christian? Example: I'm Wiccan so the next time my dad starts preaching at me would it be ok to use Proverbs 21: 23 against him?

Sapient, I'm not looking to "ruffle some feathers." I'm truly curious. Obviously they can't use it against us because we don't believe it but I'm just wondering if I could use it to get my dad off my case.
P.S. He doesn't know I'm wiccan but he thinks I should be pentecostal like him.

Chieko, I'm giving him as much respect as he gives me which is little to none. And I don't eat his food, I eat my moms food. She's the one who buys it all. He's a realtor and doesn't bring anything in so she pays for everything.

Xians will tell you it's wrong, of course. What kind of answer do you expect from them? I'm guess you don't really care the answer. Just looking to rustle some feathers.

The bible is a complex work. Oftentimes I see non-Christians use verses in the bible for their own benefit unawares they are taking something completely out of context. That's how you end of with people claiming the bible contradicts itself, or the bible doesn't say this or that. So forget about using the bible as a means to fight back.
Your dad preaches to you out of love even if his methods irritate you. Remind him that he's already done all that God has asked him to do. Now it's really between you and God. He's off the hook.

It's not a matter of right or wrong. It's more a question of knowledge vs. ignorance. Though not a Christian, I have read the Bible, as well as many sacred texts, and I have certainly been known to quote the Bible as the need arises. I don't quote the Bible against people, per se, but to illustrate a point.

Having participated in many discussions with close minded Christians this would be the only source of "proof" to use. But they will come back with "you did not understand the correct meaning." At which time it is best just to turn around and walk away.
Once a person is truly brainwashed it is very difficult to get them to see the light. They saw the light at the end of the tunnel and it was a train.

...you can, however, because you don't believe in the Word of God you're "hitch-hiking" on words that your belief system is lacking... be careful... he might retort to Proverbs chapter 30 vs. 5 & 6 and then Proverbs chapter 26, vs. 4.... The Bible is NOT your "life-boat" for Words of wisdom as you believe in some "other" doctrines... It belongs to "believers"....sorry, you'll have to find your own book of wisdom that has stood the test of time as Gods Word has... not just the "religious gymnastics" that your belief system might attempt to offer.

Jesus would use it! Hey, use the whole Book! You can find a lot stronger stuff than that in there! But Jesus would say something like, "Have you ever read... ?" "What do you think about.... ?" "What's your understanding of...?" At the very least you and your dad might be able to have some interesting conversation.

I like the idea myself.
Unfortunantly I was forced to listen to my father-in-law preach for an hour last night about how we need to be converted because only Babtists are good people.
The whole line "If nothing changes, nothing changes !" isn't much to convince someone to convert when their decently satisfied with their life.
I managed to hold my tounge though.

God does not mind how/who His word is spread...... there is a story in the Bible , the apostles want to stop a person on the street from preaching the word, but Jesus rebukes them, and tells them to say nothing........ I would have to study to find it ...... I will if you want me to ........ but, all I am saying is, as a Christian, and God says this, His word is living and real, so whos' ever mouth is comes from makes no difference, it is still the word and is being spoken........ God bless

The Bible says only believers have the Holy Spirit to accurately understand and interpret the Bible. So if you do quote verses, include that one. It disqualifies you.

If you use this verse you will be using it out of context. It is not for telling people to shut up. It is saying don't speak things that will not uplift christians or you may have a disaster. The bible is written to Christians, not to unbelievers.

Philosophically, it is a completely legitimate argument tactic known as "reductio ad absurdum." Essentially, you explain to the person that, using their own premises, you can derive a contradiction. If your Dad used the bible as a premise, it's completely legitimate to quote it back to him to show him the absurdity of his beliefs.
