It could just be comfortable. Does your cat have other places to lay down? Does the litter in the box feel colder or hotter than the surrounding temperature? Maybe she's too hot or too cold.

My cat fell asleep in the litter box once. He never did it again, so I am assuming he had to take a big turd and it exhausted him. lol

it's been hot lately, my doggie was litter trained and sometimes she would just lay in there panting during the summer. it was significantly cooler than on the floor next to it. that or she's just having fun.

Isn't that strange?? My Fuff was at the vet's for a dental and her yearly exam, and the next day she was just lying in the litterbox...I asked what she was doing...she left after a little bit but didn't tell me why she was doing it ;)
My guess is it's cool.

cats are odd that way, it could just enjoy it's own scent a lot or the scent of another cat that uses that, it could be very comfy in there and dark for it, or it could be pregnant, that would be its way of nesting, if you want go to this site and it will help to you to decide if he or she is pregnant or not...http://www.pets.ca/articles/article-expecting.htm
good luck

She's looking for a cool place. Is she ill? Have you taken her temperature? Might want to take her to the vet if this is a new behavior.

my cat used to do the same thing!!! lol.

it was just because it was cooler there than in her bed. if your cat has a bed move it to a cooler room in your house, even if its in the bathroom too!
