Depends on which diet you are on. I am personally not a fan of fad diets. Your "diet" should be a lifetime commitment to yourself. It is important to have a good breakfast every morning to ensure that your body doesn't go into a starving mood and crave high calorie or high fatty foods. If you are just trying to eat healthy, here is what I suggest. Eat a variety of HEALTHY foods everyday. One reason that many diets fail, is the fact that people become bored with what they are eating. Limiting to a small selection is never a good idea. Always eat in moderation. There is a reason why labels have the 1 serving suggestion. Many people count calories, which is good if you really need to lose a lot of weight. Keep a food diary to write down what you eat and WHEN you eat it. It’ll help you determine when your weak moment of the day is.

Breakfast - eat at least 1 fruit (banana would be the best) and 1 serving of something with "substance" as my dad would say. Examples:

Cherrios – the honey nut kind, not the fruity/sugar loaded one, use 2% milk or soy milk
Grits – not very well known in northern states but easy to make and great with a little butter, a pinch of salt and pepper
Oatmeal – Quakers make good instant oatmeals with different flavors
Eggs – limit to 2 per day, cooked anyway you like
Yogurt – try different brands until you find one that you like, Yoplait is my favorite
Bagels – so many kinds out there to try, but go easy on the cream cheese
Cream of Wheat – it’s similar to Oatmeal

Do not eat the junky fast food breakfasts. Stay away from those breakfast bars and donuts.

Other suggestions: Eat a larger lunch and smaller dinner. Eat pastas and red meats at lunch time. Fish for dinner. In between meals, have healthy snacks such as fruit or veggies or salads. Stop eating 2 hours before you go to bed in order to give your body time to digest. And of course, you should always exercise a minimum of 3 days a week. Your personal health is your choice.

I eat this every morning and its great. Old fashion oatmeal (1/4cup to a 1/2cup depending on your calorie needs) I mix in some cinnamon and water and cook in the microwave until done. Stiring and adding more water occasionally. I also add 10 dry roasted almonds for a little healthy fat. For the last min I throw in a 1/2 cup raw blueberries (fresh or frozen). I also have either egg whites or egg beaters and when I have more time will make an omelet with spinach and tomatoes. Really filling and a great start to your day. It seems like alot of food but breakfast is the most important time to fill up and its really nutritious. Drink a glass of water before breakfast and with breakfast, this really helps too.

Honestly oatmeal is the best. I get plain, and stir in about a T of peanut butter. It's delicious!

Also, whole wheat toast with PB and a banana, SPecial K or other healthy cereal, fresh fruit, Carnation instant breakfasts... these are all good breakfasts for dieting.

You should make your breakfast the most important meal of the day if you’re dieting, or as least as important as lunch and dinner.

150 calories are not enough to curb your hunger so you might end up eating more during the day and being tired for lack of energy, so your body will even spend less calories at rest.

The MOST IMPORTANT thing you should do is make sure you’re eating as least as much as your BMR (Basic Metabolic Rate) so your body does not slow down your metabolism, making it harder for you to lose weight on a low calories diet (the average for a woman would be about 1,200 calories).

BMR: women: lbs x 0.453 = kilograms x 7.18 + 795
(BMR: men: lbs x 0.453 = kilograms x 10.2 + 879)

If you eat less than your BMR, you might lose weight at first but then your body will adapt and lower your metabolism and unless you will be able to eat a low calorie diet for the REST OF YOUR LIFE (which you will not), you will certainly gain weight as soon as you eat a normal 1,200 calories diet. This is why a lot of people just get fat eating normally, because they dieted before and did not eat enough calories…then they gained weight without eating too much so they got depressed and started eating even more, so they got fatter and fatter until they had to have their stomach tied so they could not eat normally anymore.

Eat as much as your BMR and exercise to lose your extra pounds. Do some low intensity cardio for fat burning and some weight training to build muscle mass and rev up your metabolism.

Let’s say, you need 1,200 calories…you could have a 300 calories breakfast, lunch and dinner and two 150 calories snacks. Keep it simple…as this point, you do not need to make complicated recipes (you cannot have sauces anyway). Have egg whites, fruits, steamed vegetables, whole wheat bread (always choose the whole wheat version of anything to fill you up longer…brown rice, brown bread, brown pasta), low fat milk, chicken without the skin, cooked without fat…Try to eat half a grapefruit before breakfast, lunch and dinner (or drink a grapefruit drink), this will greatly help you to lose weight (grapefruit specifically).

You can make very filling salads that are only 250 calories (lots of lettuce with a little vinaigrette with a dash of olive oil, good kind of fat) and things you like (egg white, a slice of ham, some olives and mushrooms, a few pieces of low fat cheese).

For breakfast, I have my half grapefruit and then some whole wheat bread with a dash of jam and a cup of 1% milk with coffee. I sometimes have a waffle instead of bread.
My snacks usually are a fruit, like an apple, or 3tbsp of “nuts and fruits”, or a piece of cheese on a toast.
My dinner is my half of grapefruit and some meat (chicken) or fish (steamed salmon) and lots of steamed vegetables.
I’m never hungry and I always feel full and never feel the need to have a desert.

Your diet should be about 10 to 15% proteins, 25% fat and the rest carbohydrates, for energy.

I find that the most filling is oatmeal. It is really nutritous! Have some fruit and whole wheat toast with low fat butter or peanut butter.
You can have a cup of coffee or even tea.

Its true what they say too...if you stop eating breakfast to lose weight you do gain more.

Kashi go lean cereal, 140 calories in one serving (without the skim milk). Serving size is a cup. Fruit is also always a good breakfast. Also, what i have found helpful is only drinking a serving of juice in the morning, and just water the rest of the day.
