I'm extremely ticklish and even though fingers tickle me a lot, I've always wondered why fingernails and certain other sharp objects (comb, hairbrush, etc) tickle me A LOT MORE.

Does anyone know the answer to this one?

Oh, yeah. If I were to ask you if you consider ticklish people weak (physically or mentally), what would your answer be?

Hey guys, especially LILSKIS. I LOVE your answers & I too love being ticklish, being tickled & tickling back. I would feel so bored and left out if I wasn't ticklish. I also don't consider ticklish people to be weak, I just wanted to know your thoughts. LUZ, I know what you mean. Tickling can be painful if prolonged, but not if you don't go that far. Two friends of mine once pinned me to the floor, one friend holding my feet, the other holding my upper body & they both tickled me at the same time. It was so much fun, but they both had sharp fingernails & it TICKLED LIKE CRAZY, LOL!

I am very ticklish too and I LOVE to tickle and I LOVE to be tickled.

I have found that it does not have to be sharp to tickle a lot. I will agree that if somebody gently drags their fingernails across my skin, it tickles a lot more than fingertips.

I have also found that the Sonicare Electric Toothbrush, the Fukuoku Massage Gloves and paint brushes are all very effective tickling tools and each of them offer a different tickle sensation which get me rolling with laughter.

I do not consider it to be a weakness or a strength - just a pleasure.

Of course, I only engage in consensual tickling and I always respect the limits, concerns and desires of the person sharing the tickling encounter with me.

To illustrate the point, you might take a pen with a medium point and write something, then write the same thing with a pen with a fine point. Comparing the two lines, it should not be difficult to see that the fine point line penetrates a little deeper, and the contact is less diffuse. I'm also extremely ticklish and would generally agree with you about sharper objects tickling more, though occasionally it is the other way around for some reason. Gotta love the inexplicable.

I actually tried this once with two pens, wrote, "This is tickling my feet," and then studied the lines afterwards. I could definitely see a distinct difference, and it made me quite twitchy.

As for considering ticklish people weak, I look at it the other way round, even though it's common to say that ticklishness is someone's "weakness". (There's always the popular image to counter of someone tough or heroic being able to withstand great hardships but being completely wrecked by tickling.) I consider a parallel to hypnosis. People who think being ticklish is a weakness are likely to think that someone who can't be hypnotized would be that way because of some sort of mental strength that could resist it. But I have heard hypnotists speak of it as if it were much more an act of partnership than an act of opposition. The best subjects are creative, imaginative, receptive and sensitive. The same qualities seem to apply to the most ticklish people of my acquaintance. I wouldn't go so far as to call lack of ticklishness any sort of necessary deficiency, but I would say that the most ticklish people I know do possess such good qualities in abundance.

i think the sharp objects probably tickle more becuase it's a smaller point that's touching your skin and activating the nerves rather than a blunt one that spreads out the pressure over a larger area.

I'm extremely ticklish too and don't consider myself weaker than a non-ticklish person

This might sound extremely weird, but some people actually find pain to be ticklish (if that makes sense).
