Low quality foods like Beneful and Pedigree are typically sprayed with restaurant fat at the end of their extruding process to make them more appealing to dogs.

How most dog food is made: All of the ingredients (which mostly consist of corn and other grains) are blended together into a dough. The dough is fed through screws of the extruding machine where it is subjected to steam and high pressure as it's pushed through. The shape of what it's being pushed through determines the shape of kibble. The hot pressurized dough exits the extruder and is cut into tiny kibbles. The dough returns to normal air pressure and puffs into it's final shape. This unappetizing product is then sprayed, typically with restaurant fat, to make it more appealing.

The flies are probably after the fat that's been sprayed on the food. I'd recommend switching to a higher quality food, if not only for the health of your dog. High quality foods have high levels of meat, low levels of grains, and are made with ingredients that the USDA certified as human grade. Some brands of high quality dog foods include: Wellness, Innova (especially Innova EVO, as it contains no grains), Natural Balance, Canidae, Nature's Variety, Merrick, California Natural, Solid Gold, Fromm, Blue Buffalo, and Newman's Own. Wellness is one brand that bakes their dog food instead of extruding it as described above. You're more likely to find high quality foods at small and independent pet stores. If you're having trouble locating a store with these foods, perform a quick Google search and find the company's website; most pet food companies have store locaters on their sites that can point you in the direction of a store that carries their product based on your zip code.

Also, it's important to keep dog food as "fresh" as possible. Always look for expiration or manufacturer’s date. If you find the date of manufacturing, contact the company and ask how long of a shelf life their foods have. Make sure to buy a bag of kibble that will last your dog a maximum of one month. After a month the food becomes stale, looses some nutritional value, and the fats and oils may become rancid which can ultimately contribute to cancer, heart disease, eye disease, arthritis, allergies, and kidney disease. However, you may buy a bag of food that will last longer than a month if you have the freezer space to freeze the portion that won’t be used in a month. Frozen kibble will remain nutritious about as long as frozen meat will. Room temperature kibble should be kept in a sealed, non-porous container such as a tin. For the sake of freshness and obesity prevention, do not keep kibble in his dish 24/7. Put set amounts of kibble in his dish 2-3 times daily and remove what he has not eaten after 10-20 minutes.

There was something in a few brands of wet dog and cat food, including Iams. I don't remember what exactly was wrong with it but it was just in a recent batch where some toxin or bacteria got into the food supply.

Feed your dog high quality food, and bring him in the house. It's too hot outside!

Dog food will attract flies no matter what type of dog food it is. Wet food will attract more flies. Try feeding your dog inside.

keep the dog's food dish clean and free of old food...bleach it occasionally, rinse well. dog food contains oils (some brands more than others..) and perhaps this is what is attracting the flies...

otherwise feed the dog in the house like the rest of us?
