At a pet shop or through a private breeder. In the USA they sell between $600.-1500.00 But accessories add to the cost bring it to close to $2000.00 for a parrot, then Vet bills follow.

Parrots can be purchased , depending on the type, for roughly $200 - $2000. There are ones which can cost $10,000 or more!
You can find them at pet shops or local breeders in your area.

You must however also consider the other costs. A good Parrot cage can cost from about $300- $1500 . You must have an actual parrot cage, as a full sized Parrot can bite through the bars of a smaller cage like a can opener !
they also need special toys, special food, and may need an Avian Vet. These are not cheap, and YES, it must be an Avian Vet, because a horse doctor won't know how to treat Exotic Newcastle Disease in a Macaw !

You might be better off getting a Cockateil. They are much smaller, coat much less ($50-$100), eat less, and don't need an expensive parrot cage! They are loving, caring, and can be taught to talk.

If it must be a Parrot, consider getting a Quaker Parrot. They will still need a Parrot cage because of their strong beaks, but they are much smaller and easier to handle! they are great talkers too !!

You need to do a lot of research to be sure what you are getting into. A Parrot can live for up to 80 years, and they are very sensitive and intelligent creatures. They need lots of attention ( at least 1-2 hours a day), and require lots of patience!!
If you need help with research or would like to speak to some helpful and experienced bird owners, I can direct you to a great yahoo group! Just E-mail me!

Good Luck !

parrots make great pets. they require a good bit of socialization/attention. they have long life spans and require a varied diet... fruits vegetables, grains and some even like an occasional small piece of cooked chicken or turkey. many fruit seeds/pits can be dangerous, avoid these.

you can start by finding a breeder in your area or a local bird club.. you can do a yahoo search on PARROT BREEDERS . or you can check BIRD BREEDERS -- those who have websites will likely pop up.

you can also go to your local pet supply stores and ask the employees about local breeders... and if they have a bulletin board, check it, as well.

prices depend upon the type of parrot you want (conure, or a larger parakeet breed, there are amazon parrots and african greys, etc). You will find that birds range from $150 to over $2,000.

There are some cute little parakeet breeds as well....which look like very little parrots.. the Yellow Cheeked parakeet is one, and they can make a good pet.

some others are:

australian ring neck parakeet
sun conure
english budgie (looks like a regular parakeet, only larger build)
amazons, such as blue front, red lored, yellow nape
african and timneh gray
cockatoo - variety of types
macaws - variety of types and sizes.

do web searches to read about parrots and parakeet types to see what might suit you and your lifestyle.

these animals will give you years of love and pleasure.

i hope you find what you're looking for hon. take care

A breeder is the best bet if you want a good pet. But parrots don't make good pets for people who don't know the facts. They are noisey, messy, and can bite(Hard when the want too) Price can range from 100 to 2000. I don't recommend larger parrots fro beginners because with size comes more and more care. Make sure you buy one feathered companion to start with. ;) Check out:
Cockatiels(About 100 dollars)
Love birds (About 70)
Budgies (About 25-40)
Green Cheek conure (About 250)

Those are all great beginner birds but do your research and make sure they will fit in to your lifestyle and that you can provide the proper cares. birds are are all complex in one way or another, do your research and if you get the right bird you will have a friend for many years. Whatever you do: Do not rush into buying a bird it always ends badly.
