identical children (twins, quads, etc) share the same dna. fraternal twins, quads, etc. share the same uterus but have very separate dna blueprints.

its like this - identical twins are a result of one fertilized egg splitting into different parts to make multiple children. fraternal twins is a result of more than one egg being released then fertilized by more than one sperm.

When a woman gives birth to two children at or about the same time, they are twins.

If she became pregnant with twins because there were two eggs that were both fertilized, the children would be twins, but could look very different or be a boy and a girl. Of course they might also look very much alike.

If the woman had one egg that became fertilized and then split into two separate babies, they would both be in one amniotic sack, and they would be identical. Another term would be maternal twins. Twins that are not identical are referred to as fraternal twins.

Twins are 2 identical babies that split from the same egg. If there are 4 identical babies, that just means the egg split 4 ways.

Its the smae thing just in a larger number. Twins the cell splits into 2. Quads the cell splits into 4. Its rare because normally with more than 2 babies, there are 2 different eggs that are fertalized. With means they are not identical. In this case, One egg split into 4, which is very rare.

Maybe it's so obvious that nobody else seems inclined to mention this, but when you come right down to it, fraternal twins are just siblings that are the same age, whereas identical twins are clones of each other.

That's the difference between one-egg/one-sperm and two-eggs/two-sperms.

Quite a big difference.

FYI I have a fraternal twin sister whom I am very close to. Well we've known each other all our lives, right? Only twins are able to say that :)

Twins can be either identical or fraternal. Identical twins occur only when one fertilized egg (or zygote) splits completely, resulting in two individuals with identical DNA. Fraternal twins result from two different zygotes (from two distinct eggs) being carried to term at the same time. So you can have twins that are not identical.

Twins and/or quadruplets can be identical or fraternal.

Identical is the same egg that has split once for twins and those 2 eggs splitting again for quads.
Fraternal would be 2 separate eggs that got fertilized for twins and 4 separate eggs for quads.

Twins is 2 babies and can be identical or fraternal. Identical babies can be any number, how ever many times the fertilized egg spilts. They have the exact same DNA.

for the above story they are identical quadruplets, basically one fertilized egg split, making identical twins, then the 2 eggs both split making 4 identical babies. Very rare I hear.

Unidentical multiple births are when more than one egg is released at once and are all fertilised.
Identical is when the one fertilised egg splits into 2 (twins) 3 (triplets) etc.
