Well thats the hard truth for you. There are 2 kind of people in this world. One type are thise who are sociable and receptive to fellow humans and the other type who are stuck up and think they the world owns them something. Just your luck you ran into the latter type.
Anyways, that should not stop you at all form approaching other people. Itts really easy to make friends at the gym. The best type to make freinds with are the regulars who go there. Its not use making friends with those you come once in a while. Start noticing who always seem to be there around the time you go to the gym. A good conversation topic would be to ask her about something related to what she is doing. For example, if she is doing some weights, tell her that you can't help but noticing the exercise she is doing. Ask her waht body part it is for and how to do it. She will definately teach you. From then on, you guys are probably friends. Over the next few sessions, talk to her more, ask her about her health goals and workout program. If it fits yours, then ask her if you could work out with her and learn and help at the same time.
If you tell a person you wanna learn from them, chances are they will be honoured and oblige. So try this, if it does not work...well you always got Micheal (the previous answerer) to work out with. Good luck

Yeah a lot of people in the gym are focused on their routines and don't want to see bothered. Try taking a class, like a step aerobics class or something of the sort. You will meet people there and find they are friendlier. Most of the time, peole who take classes are interested in working out with others while people who are sticking to weights or do their own thing want to be left alone.
Try striking up a conversation with someone who appears to be at the same fitness level as you, and see what happens. You could start by saying, "see you here next week" (refferring to the class), and then next time say, "I find I get more motivated when i'm working out in a class like this or with somebody" and see what they say. If they seem to agree, say "we should meet up and do some workouts together, why not tommorrow" or something like that. I bet you will find somebody easily.
