Or do you have to wait for them to mail it to you. How long does it take if they are mailing it? This is the first time I'm applying for one.

they say it takes 6 to 8 weeks, but some times you get it sooner. you will get a copy of it, piece of paper saying you applied for one, you can use it until you get the original. they will stamp the paper.

You can go into your local Social Security Office and apply for one. They will then send it to you via regular mail in 2 - 6 weeks.

The card takes a week or two to get to you, but the number you will receive when you apply.
