If so, is there a way to make the change to component without signal loss?

The signal quality is lost on the way to S-Video.
The original signal is YCbCr. Going to S-Video, you create Y and Cb+Cr (Luma/Chroma). The S-Video to component will try to reproduce Cb and Cr signals from the Cb+Cr signal.
So, you may not lose much quality from S-video, but don't expect to gain any quality either.
Either use component from the start, or stick to S-Video all the way.

Hi landen99,

If there is a loss it is minuscule and only measurable with instruments.

I have done it and switched back & forth and I can't detect a loss of quality.
