always go to a rescue first. when i got my dog i had to choose between a purebred english springer spaniel that i could have had for free that had a great home with its breeders or a 25 dollar mutt that i didnt know what would happen if no one took him home. i chose the mutt because he really needed a home and the springer spaniels were with responsible breeders who were only breeding to better the breed and not make a profit (they wouldnt give the pups away if they wanted money) i knew those pups had a good home if no one took them. i didnt know if my dog would have one. so that is y i took them. a rescue dog u dont know where it will end up if no one takes it. but if u go to a breeder u can ask that. and personally i would go to the rescue and save the life of a dog. sure the breeder has purebreds but the shelter has dogs that really deserve a home and dogs that have been in the shelter for some time. so really think about going to a shelter. best of all in shelters u can find a lot of bigger dogs because people either realize the dog is too much of a handful or they live in a space that is inadequate for the size of dog they have and so they take them to the shelter. right now in a shelter in my area there r like 2 purebred labs that r huge. and couple other huge dogs. like there is an alaskan malamute mix and an elkhoud mix.so just go to the shelter and look around and if u find something u like thats great and if u dont keep coming back every week or keep checking their website until they have something that ur looking for

Try the pounds first! If you can't find a dog you like there, then go to the rescue places and look. Humane societies and rescue groups have a no kill policy. By taking a dog from a place like that, you'll be opening up a space for them to save a new animal from the streets or from a cruel housing like the pound. You save a life either way!
There are many such places (sometimes private homeowners will begin rescue groups and house animals, too). Ask your local veterinarian for information on where you could look. They should give you quite a list!
Also, you can never trust a puppy farm... Where human profit and animal sales meet is never a pleasant place.

Especially if you are looking for a specific breed look up the rescue first! after doing your research on breeds you are interested in call up that breed's rescue organization to learn more. Help rehome a dog! (also Rescues will often have a choice ranging from puppies to elderly dogs. You have a chance of getting a young adult dog that has all the hard work of house breaking and teaching basic commands done for you!)

If you go to petfinder.com, you can type in the qualities you want in a dog, as well as the breed. it will then give you rescues and shelters that have that specific type of dog, and it will give you a profile on it as well. Its a great way to save an animal and there are many pure breds you can find in rescue agencies! its great too, bc they are tested to see wether they are good with kids, other dogs, cats, or are agressive towards food. (and most of the time its cheaper then getting from a breeder, and shelters give out vouchers for spay and neuter). My best friend has gotten 4 pure breds all from shelters~!

If you understand that a rescue dog may in rescue for a reason...though no fault of his or her own, if some irresponsible owner allowed "cute" bad behaviors in a puppy to become dangerous habits, that still must be dealt with. If you're not certain you can do that, you're better starting with a puppy with a clean slate.
If you go with a puppy, you'll be happier in the long run going with a breeder who holds themselves to high standards...not some backyard breeder popping out puppies soley for profit.
A reputable breeder will be breeding only dogs who are excellent representatives of the breed standard to produce superior pups. They will sell puppies who do not meet their breeding/show standards as pets with a spay/neuter requirement. Health guarantees and re-homing guarantees should you have to give up your dog will be included. Large breeds prone to hip displasia will come from OFA certified parents. All this costs money, but by giving them your business you will be helping yourself to a healthy pet and helping all dogs by refusing to patronize sloppy breeders.
Good luck to you finding the perfect buddy.

I'd go to animal rescue. You would be getting a dog that wasn't overbred, like most people do when they "breed" their dogs. I've never had a dog from a rescue center that wasn't a dog with good health and a great personality.
Below is a site that offers help in making your decision.
Enjoy your new dog!!

Definitely a rescue! Those poor babies need a home, and you could find one that just melts your heart... They are so loyal and sweet, they seem to know you saved them. Plus, they are cheaper. Save a dogs life! Purebreds can always find a loving home, but rescued dogs are put down if they are not saved. I hope you make the descion that is right for you and your lifestyle. Good luck!

The only thing about getting a rescue dog is that they sometimes have behavior problems which means you are going to have to have a lot of patience so that the dog doesn't end up being a rescue dog again.

Either way make sure you understand all about the breed FIRST. That way it won't end up in a shelter because it sheds too much or has too much energy. Know what you're getting before you buy it. Many website can help you with the selection. Good luck ;-)
