you cannot say that the OT is not revelant, that you are bound to the NT, BUT, as Christians you still believe in Genesis, creationism ( Adam & Eve) the words spoken in the OT, many christians on this site spew out verses from the OT, all the time, to justify their belief, you cannot pick and choose! the NT is just the endingto the story, the story beggining with Genesis and ending with Revelations, it is all one! if you do not believe this then you are not a true believer. the OT was taught to me as a child and taught to me as truth. I don't hate you for being chritian, I don't hate anyone, I just think that the bible should be looked at rationally and for Christians to see the bible from an outside point of view, instead of with a closed mind

Because a good 90% of Christians pick and choose which parts they want to listen to. Some deny that the Sun revolves around the Earth, siding with science and blaspheming God's word. Some say evolution is correct, even though God created us in his image, thereby calling God a pile of amino acids. Some Christians don't mercilessly slaughter non-believers and gay people, thereby perpetually sinning. The list goes on and on.

The Mosaic Law taught the Israelites that they needed a Messiah. He came and offered up his life, a sacrifice given once for all time. With the death of Jesus, the Mosaic Law ended. Jesus gave a new law written on hearts not stone.

If Christians did follow the Sabbath, for example, then the would be picking and choosing what to follow, because all those laws (there were over 600 along with the 10 commandments) were only temporary. So, to continue following these things would show a disrespect for Jesus' sacrifice and for God's arrangement.

The Old Testament doesn't just contain the Mosaic Law, so it is still relevant. We can still learn from the Mosaic Law though, the laws of your country no doubt reflect some of the laws handed down to Moses. Jesus even said that the two greatest commands were that you love your God with your whole soul, mind, heart and strength and that you love your neighbour as yourself. If the Mosaic Law, and the rest of the OT for that matter, wasn't relevant Jesus would have quoted from it.

Christians are not required to keep the Sabbath any more so people can work on a Sunday if they like. Sunday wasn't the Jewish sabbath day anyway, it was from Friday 6pm to Saturday 6pm.

Death was a punishment for some sins. But isn't that the case in some countries, like America for example?

You may have read the whole book, but you clearly understand little.

I can't believe you begged people to star you. That's pathetic.

Why doesn't anybody do what their "good books" tell them
Mainly because the books are out of date, and what is recommended in them is not only barbarous but also illegal outdated, unenlightened and prescribed by a tribe that lived in the desert (how many) thousands of years ago.
Life for them was different then.
Man needs a code to live by, not a set of rules, rituals and other useless crap.
About the best "commandment"/moral I can think of is, 'If everyone were to do what I'm thinking of doing would it make the world a better place?'
Read Leviticus in the bible. There you can stone your wife for being unfaithful (can't remember if Moses said wives could kill unfaithful husbands, but I doubt it) or if you're too lazy get your slaves to do it.
All in all, if people who profess religion were to practise what they preach, the world would be a better place.

The Bible doesn't 'preach' anything with any certain flawlessness as far as I know. It is what people 'preach' from it, that is the question. We appropriate what re-inforces our a priori beliefs, we select the material that best argues the case and then spice it up with a little hermeneutic flavouring and flowery narrative.

Both Atheists and Believers 'preach' their beliefs usually quoting verbatim from some scholar or sage or a popular canonised philosophical (usually Hellenestic) tradition.
The only words that will outlive the Bible by about a triliion billion light years are the ones that Jesus spoke and these words 'preach' for eternity having existed without a beginning and without an end. His words testify to this, a self attesting testimony about eternity.
If you believe that Jesus was just a sage, an enlightened human being or indeed a Jewish shibboleth. Well, that's your belief, and who can convince you otherwise but you? Your future is in your hands.

Many cultures have not evolved past the barbarian tribal cultures of 2000 years ago....such as the Muslims....

many of the Old Testament laws were applicable during that time frame, the fulfillment of prophecy and the sacrifice of Christ the old laws were fulfilled....

The ten commandments laws and the dietary laws are still in effect....and the 4th commandment of remember the Sabbath Day...

The papacy changed that to Sunday.....

perhaps if you read and studies the Bible you would have a better understanding of the changes in times and cultures .....

You question would be better of , "why have times changed so much that people are unable to comprehend the laws of God and prevented by changes in society to follow the Law?"

You are purposely taking verses out of context, and out of time frame, and out of culture to point a finger at what you perceive as inconsistencies in the Bible....

Historical and cultural.....today is very different

The old Testament laws were fulfilled in Christ, BUT that does not mean the laws are no longer valid...the ten commandments are still in effect they were not canceled...the special Sabbaths were ceremonial and no longer needed...The Sabbath day of worship has never changed...

reading all the answers shows the biblical ignorance that is so common today...

When Christ came to Earth (New Testament) the Old Testament was made obselete. That was the whole point of him coming to give mankind a scond chance by allowing themselves to repent.
I suppose you could see it as a "before" and "after" the OT was God's Wrath etc. when man sinned and when he turned his back on the world and the NT is when God sent a part of himself down (his son Christ) to atone for all sins and give the world another chance. So therefore modern day Christians do not follow the OT as Christ coming to Earth and giving way to the NT over ruled the OT. Some Jews still believe in the OT as they do not believe that Christ was God and therefore are still waiting for the predictions in the OT of a coming of God to occur.

Okay, you've added a lot to your question, but basically this is how it should go...

Being a CHRISTian means that you follow Christ's law i.e. by definition laws set out in the New Testament. In the NT, Jesus set out a code for living for his followers. He tells us to love our God, love our neighbour, build His church and look after the poor. If you look at these 4 things, you'd have a pretty good idea of how to conduct your life. In the Old Testament, God set out rule after rule after rule for the Israelites, but this didn't work and they continuously sinned, which is why He sent Jesus to us to provide the ultimate sacrifice for our sins.

Most reasonable Christians use the Old Testament as an historical reference for Christianity, but bear in mind that the Old Testament is law for Jewish people, and predates Christ (who Christianity is founded on).

Interesting - you quote the Bible but knock it's followers!

You stick to the Old Testament and ignore the New!

You cannot just be a mischief maker, or even just be someone trying to be clever. You are exposing a big chunk of your psychology here. What is it exactly you are afraid of?

It does not matter what religion, spiritualism, atheism or agnosticism anyone chooses to believe and follow - they should be allowed to do so in peace. That you chose to attack it says a lot about your insecurity, immaturity and intolerance!!!

A lot of the Law in the Torah is government law given to the nation of Israel, which was a theocracy. God no longer works through a theocratic nation, so he does not give national laws and enforce those laws with (earthly) punishments.

"My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world" (John 18:36).

there are various stuff in the previous testomony that present day-day Christians do no longer persist with. Society is rather diverse from what it as quickly as replaced into and Jesus got here to make a sparkling covenant with the church. He referred to loving thy neighbour, forgiveness, community and issues of this nature. those are the flaws I attempt and persist with. So no i do no longer evaluate myself any much less of a Christian because of fact i do no longer approve of reducing off a womens hand for grabbing a mans inner maximum areas. I additionally do no longer decide or condemn people who're gay, yet rather love them as I do others and enable them to stay their lives as they so decide for.

Because they aren't perfect... Actually no one is perfect. I'm a christian and I try to live according to God's word everyday... Even though sometimes I fail... That's were repentence would come in.... I know that there are some people out there that call themselves "Christians" but don't act anything like it... Just remember that not every single christian is like that...
