If we had an athiest president who did not make any decisions based on religious falacies? Im not speaking of the "atheist" who is simply mad at god and will join him later either. I am referring to the nice, smart, intilectual atheist that I have encoutered on YA. I for one would love that. If I were president, gays, women, different races, would have all the rights as anyone else. If christians arent happy they can start their compunds - no guns though. No religion in the white houe! They can have all the rights too, dont get me wrong. i just want to rid the mix. Which it isnt...

Too bad there are a gazillion christians in the US. Anyone agree?

i expect 45 christian thumbs down on this...

JESUSE CHRISTO - CHRISTIANS READ THIS THROUGH. NO GUNS ON YOUR COMPUND IF YOU CHOSE TO LIVE ON ONE. THAT WOULD BE TROUBLE. KEEP YOUR GUNS LEGALLY - I HAVE NO ISSUE WITH THAT. IM SHOCKED AT HOW CLOSE MINDED PEOPLE ARE.

OF COURSE POLICY PLAYS INTO THIS. DONT VOTE FOR SOMEONE JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE ATHEIST. MY POINT IS WITHOUT RELIGION. CHRISTIAN PRESIDENTS BASE THEIR ISSUES AND CONCERNS ON JUST THAT. ISSUES ARE ALWAYS THE MAIN CONCERN WITH ME AS WELL...I JUST HAVE TO SIFT THROUGH CHRISTIANS EVERY TIME...

THE TERM ATHEIST IS USED AS AN ESXAMPLE OF NO RELIGION. OPEN YOUR MINDS. MAYBE I SHOULD HAVE WORDED IT DIFFERENTLY SO SOME OF YOU COULD ACTUALLU UNDERSTAND THE POINT IM TRYING TO MAKE.

It'd be nice to have a President make decisions without trying to please some supreme being.

I suppose the closest we've had in the past couple decades was Clinton. Still, he was a Christian, but at least he didn't go starting wars with the hope of pleasing his imaginary bloodthirsty master.

I would like to see politicians actually vote for what is right for their country rather than what is right for their religion. It'd be a nice change in Taliban America.

It sure would - you dont see the rest of the western worlds politicians blathering on about god this and god that. I think it should be the first question Candidates are asked on a Televised debate. Can you make up your own mind and accept responsiblity for the decisions you make in the Office you are choosing to run for , or do you need a quasi mystical crutch to lean on?
Regardless of your religous beliefs , a truly christian president wouldnt be too bad as tolerance and understanding would be a nice thing , not dubyahs God bless me, and my lackys, and the people who give me money, and corrupt big businesses - but nobody else type of Christianity.

P.S.Thor told me to bomb Iraq!

I don't think that an atheist is necessarily the solution. It sounds as though you believe any person with religion is incapable of running a country properly. I should point out that the US is the only super power in the world, and christian presidents have brought it to where it is. I also don't want a president that makes decisions based on falacies very generally. I know plenty of atheists that use falacies in their arguments as well. I wouldn't trust any of them to run the country. Our current president is a schmuck, no doubt about that. But I think religion generally does not play as important a role as you might think in decisions on foreign policy and the like.

Imagine if Bush were an atheist. Would that make him a better president? I sincerely doubt it. I think he would make decisions based on who is most likely to vot e for him and what he believes to be in the US's best interest, even if he is completely off the mark.

I agree. And I think that if a candidate admitted being an atheist, there would be a huge furor over it for about a week. Then it would settle down, and politicians would get back to the usual mud-slinging. The only candidates who would bring up the atheist candidate's beliefs would be the ones that are slipping in the polls, and are trying to rally votes and money from the fundamentalists.

So are you going to run?

It'll never happen. When Christians say they'd rather vote for a homosexual than an atheist, you see what we're up against. The pitfall of a democracy is that it depends on the wisdom of the people; so if the people are a bunch of willfully ignorant, deluded, credulous, hypocritical, sentimental, insulated, complacent sheep, it's little wonder we find ourselves in precisely the situation we're in at this very freaking moment.

Look at Mitt Romney! He'll never get the nomination just because he's the wrong brand of Christian to appeal to the bigots in the GOP base. They'd sooner vote for Hillary than an atheist. They need some pandering weasel like "W" to get them all riled up at the polls.

As a Christian, I would have no problem with an atheist in the White House...as long as I agreed with his or her policies.

I wouldn't vote for someone based on their Christianity, because I've read Machiavelli's "The Prince", so I wouldn't vote for an atheist due to his or her atheism.

It's about policy, my friend, not religion.

You get a thumbs up from me and if this candidate should run with good policies based on evidence and rational decision making rather than appeasement of superstition they would get my vote. Unfortunately, the U.S. has a ways to go before such a candidate will be electable. I hope that things will change before it becomes a theocracy and slips down the tube any further.

Gee, where to start....

Firstly gays, women, and different races already have the same rights as everyone else. I find it unfortunate that the idea that gays, women, and different races don't need special laws just for them is often interpreted is a lack of equality.

Secondly, Christians (and many other religions as well) can and do have compounds.

Thirdly, freedom of religion is fundamental to our nation and separation of church and state is codified in our laws. It is true that most of our leadership has been traditionally Christian, but that is only because Christians make up the majority of the populace. Live with it.

And last but not least, as for your apparent anti-gun stance, exactly how do you expect the population at large to defend itself against a government that chooses to cease having general elections and rule by totalitarian edict? I know it is a hard concept for you "all guns are bad" folks to handle, but providing a mechanism against government gone bad is one of the fundamental reasons for our second amendment.

I will refrain from giving you a thumbs down, but only because your rant stems from ignorance rather than malice. Perhaps you should learn a bit more about the system you live in.

I would expect his intentions to be good, but you must realize there is way too much red tape involved in our Republic. You'd also have to consider that not every atheist is liberal. There are conservative, and moderate atheists. Just because they are atheist, does not guarantee they would mirror all your beliefs. The best we could hope for is vetoes on unconstitutional bills, but not necessary the legislation of new ideals. This takes a vote from Congress which would still be very much biased. It's good in theory, but an Atheist Dictator would be the only way to get some of these larger topics addressed properly. Vote for me(for dictator)!

I am a Christian- but I believe in choosing the best person for the job-- NOT based on religious claims- Bush for one-- was trying to talk the talk--but something just never seemed right with him.... As long as I continued to have the right to BE a Christian-- I do not care what affiliation the person running would be..
