Food will be about $40 a month. Vet care - including puppy shots and spaying or neutering - assume $500 the first year, perhaps less in future years (and perhaps more as they get older and may develop health problems) - this is assuming the dog is healthy and doesn't get injured. Dental cleaning - $200 a year. Dog licensing - anywhere from $20-50 a year depending on where you live. $65 or so for microchipping - one time fee. Toys - as much as you want to spend - assume about $100. Obedience training - $70-$200. Grooming - depends on if you use a groomer or buy grooming tools and do it yourself - $50 for tools or $50 a session from a groomer. Don't forget pet sitting or boarding costs when you travel and as an option, doggie daycare if you choose to do that.

First it is shepherd not sheppard. Sorry pet peeve of mine!

If your dog is a pet with no health issues then you have to

vaccinate yearly {$100}
heartworm prevention {$100}
deworm {$20}

Feed {$20 a month we feed kirkland signatures and one 40 pound bag lasts each dog about a month}

Toys {$10} this can be as much or as little as you make it. Most of our treats come from a butcher...we take the bones left over and freeze them and feed them to our dogs.

You should be able to keep a healthy happy shepherd for about $500 a year.

Now if you are breeding then you have health testing, xrays, vet checks, ultrasounds....

If your dog gets sick or has health issues...then that will obviously cost more as well.

The first year is always the most expensive as there are more shots required.

After that, annual vaccs run anywhere between $80- $120 (depending on your vet's prices)

Average vaccs 100
Interceptor for 1 yr 72 (heartworm preventative)
15 bags Canidae 600 (quality food)
Advantix 165 (flea & tick prevention)
$937

Those are just primary needs and does not include any incidentals or extras (injuries, illnesses, worming treatments, grooming supplies, collars, leashes, toys, treat.....etc), crate, fence.

Hope the break-down helps.

Not including the price of the dog it would cost you between £150 to £650 on food depending on the brand. and about £60 a year for worming and fleaing. not much at all. between £210 and £710

They say that the annual cost for a dog including annual vet visits, food, toys etc is around $1400.00 give or take, for some it could be more depending on if your dog gets sick or you spoil the dog a lot.

Dogs aren't cheap regardless of breed.

I read somewhere that the average dog can cost somewhere around 11,000 in a 15 yr life span. Including vet care, meds, toyss, food etc.

I'll give you factors to consider and you can do the math.

1) cost of puppy (only you know) $ ???.

2) cost of food, depends on brand you choose, for a rough estimate, you can calculate cost of your favorite large breed dog food, and use 4 cups of kibble per day x 365 days divided by # of cups in a bag.

3) cost of flea/tick treatment depends on which brand you buy. Assume large breed dosage, and check prices at jefferspet.com online as they are cost effective. calculate this for 8 mo/year as you can usually skip Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb

4) cost to neuter (varies male/female and vets in your area may charge different than my area)

5) cost of dog bed

6) cost of grooming supplies

7) cost of heartworm treatment depends on which one you use.

8) cost of toys & accessories (collar, leash)

9) cost of vet visits & immunizations (7-way, rabies, bordatella)

Those are most of the major items you need to spend $$ on. The cost on all varies depending on what brand you choose, and where you live.

It all depends where you live. With basic veterinary care and food for any large dog it could cost you upwards of $1000/ year to own a dog.
